REV. MR THOMAS SMART (1822) | Portrait after Reynolds (1735, private collection): Mezzotint with scratching, 22.6 x 16.3cm, British Museum. 'Rev. Mr Smart was Vicar of Maker when 11-year-old Reynolds painted his portrait in 1735, the same year the sitter died. This print is a later derivation of the oil on canvas that is in private hands. With art materials provided by George, 1st Earl of Mount Edgcumbe (1720-1795), it is traditionally believed to be Reynolds’ first oil painting.' ✫ღ⊰n
