map of the Marquette-Joliet expedition... (continued)...They passed the present site of Chicago on this part of the trip, and returned to Green Bay in late September. Their four-month journey had carried them more than 2,500 miles. The Marquette-Joliet expedition proved that the Mississippi River flowed into the Gulf of Mexico, and were probably the first white men to enter what is now Illinois. Green Bay
Here's the man in the middle of US map. This is a good tool to help students remember where these midwestern states are located.

My teacher showed me this when I was in the 5th grade. Now my eyes are drawn to this figure every time I see a US map! Add frying ckn in a pan for Kentucky (Fried Ckn), and it's Chef MIMAL - the initials of the states, top to bottom. Really helped kiddos last year!

Here's the man in the middle of US map (aka Mr. MIMAL). This is a good tool to help students remember where these midwestern states and Mississippi River are located.
I always talk about the chef in the map - usually he's holding a pan (Tennessee) of Kentucky fried chicken - but this is a nice image to help kids who sometimes can't "see" it. It's a good tool to help students remember where these midwestern states are located.
Tour the 50 STATES video. This is so cool! My 4th graders loved watching this last year, and they learned all the states and capitals!

Vocabulary Battleship game. Good foldable ideas for S.S. or Reading!
Vocabulary Battleship!! Very cool Idea! Foldables: Latest Foldable Fun You can also play as a test review. #vocabulary #games #kids #5th #grade #teaching #elementary
Latest Foldable Fun The students in my class have been working very hard on using foldables to show what they know! Even then most basic of folds have enabled the students to produce valuable tools for studying. Here are some new pictures of foldables we have been working on! Enjoy! The picture to the left is of a foldable the students worked on in partners to review George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. The students drew a picture of their president and sorted sentence strips that had key information about each president on them. We stapled the two foldables together to display them like a "Battleship" game where one side showed the information on George Washington and the other side showed the information on Abraham Lincoln. The students really enjoyed doing this foldable!
So many cool ideas for foldable classroom projects.

Classroom rules Constitution Week - Classroom Ideas from http://kreativeinkinder.blogspot.com/2011/10/we-kids.html #ConstitutionWeek #socialstudies
Why not have your students write their own Constitution like the one here from Kreative in Kinder? Tie into Charlie Brown's The Birth of the Constitution, David Catrow's We The Kids, or Jean Fritz's Shh! We're Writing the Constitution!- for high schoolers have them read book about government or freedom then make their own constitution as the class rules
Social Studies - Constitution Day - We the Students...
BP- By creating our own classroom constitution I will be teaching my students about citizenship. Furthermore, I would use this activity to be the classroom rules for the entire year. As a class we would create this so each child feels included. It is a better classroom management style then simply making your own rules and expecting kids to follow them and let alone understand them.
I do this in September for Constitution Day. We talk about classroom rules and my kids 'sign' our class's constitution.
