    map of the Marquette-Joliet expedition... (continued)...They passed the present site of Chicago on this part of the trip, and returned to Green Bay in late September. Their four-month journey had carried them more than 2,500 miles. The Marquette-Joliet expedition proved that the Mississippi River flowed into the Gulf of Mexico, and were probably the first white men to enter what is now Illinois.
