By Mary Patterson Stewart in 1838. Mary P. Stewart's Sampler, March 9, 1838". All surrounded by florals with house, trees, birds, and urns of florals at bottom. Family history on back states, "Mary Stewart (Millen) born 1820? Married David Millen, etc.". Census states Mary Patterson Stewart born April 17, 1821, in Clifton, Clark County, Ohio, later married David Millen of Xenia, Green County, Ohio, died August 8, 1911, and was buried at Woodland Cemetery in Xenia, Ohio. 18" h. x 18" w.

Elizabeth Stine (b.1784), Philadelphia, PA, 1793 - The established custom of sending country girls to be educated in Philadelphia may have applied to Elizabeth, daughter of Elizabeth and Philip Stine of Bedminster Township, Bucks County, PA. Born Feb 24, 1784, she would have worked this elegant, Nuremburg-style sampler in her tenth year, that is, when she was nine. The Philadelphia directory for 1797 indicates that the widow of Philip Stine was living at 245 High Str, next to the teacher.
