DIY concrete garden spheres using glass light fixtures - get old ones from thrift stores, fill with concrete and then break glass. Description from wefollowpics.com. I searched for this on bing.com/images
For mom: Using some quick-dry concrete, cheap glass light covers from a thrift store, and a little non-stick cooking spray, create these beautiful garden balls. the possibilities are really endless with this project- if you’ve got the space to work with concrete, you can easily find all sorts of different light covers that would give each ball a different look and style.
Shannon's Concrete Garden Spheres: Beautiful Garden Balls made of concrete and glass light covers.
Concrete garden ball made from glass light covers from thrift store. Think of the possibilities!
I am loving my new garden and the projects it has allowed me to explore! My fantastic mom first introduced me to concrete garden balls when she made her own years ago, and I knew once I had my own yard I wanted to make them too! Here's how I did it... 1~ I bought these glass light covers at a thrift store for $3. Make sure there are no cracks in the glass or it will break when you fill them with concrete! 2~ Spray the inside with non-stick cooking spray- it helps in breaking the glass away from the ball at the end! 3~ Set the glass ball in a pile of dirt or sand so that it can't roll away while you're filling it and as it's curing. 4~ We used a quick setting concrete found at most hardware stores. I like the ones with fine gravel. Pour the dry mix in the bucket (we poured about 1/2 the bag in) and then add water until it reaches the consistancy of peanut butter...or maybe a little bit runnier. You don't want it too runny, but not too hard either. Play around with it! 5~ Use a small garden shovel to fill the balls. After every scoop, give the ball a shake or twist to help it settle and break up any air bubbles. 6~ Fill the ball to the top and try to make it as level as possible. We had a little bit extra so I used an old baking pan to make a little stepping stone & used gravel (from our soil- it's so rocky!) to make the heart pattern. Let the balls sit for at least 24 hours to set up! When the concrete has turned light, use a hammer to lightly tap the glass and break away pieces off the concrete ball. Make sure you wear gloves & safety glasses so you don't injure yourself! Throw away the glass and you're done! The balls will be heavy, so be careful when you lift them! They add great detail to your garden and they're so easy! If you have any questions feel free to email me!

Every now and again I come across some unusual garden accessories and I often make a note of where I saw them for future reference. Today's post features five with a difference. The first are these recycled rice bag planters from Garden Beet. They help to reduce international landfill and support communities in Cambodia. I think they'd be fabulous used to brighten up an allotment or vegetable garden. These unusual bird feeders, designed by Eva Solo for John Lewis, would add a bit of class to any garden whilst allowing you to see the birds in all their glory. I'm not sure how squirrel-proof they'd be, but they're much more attractive than any regular feeder so definitely worth the investment if you can be sure that it's only the birds that get fed. These kettle watering cans from Hen & Hammock would add a splash of colour to any greenhouse or kitchen. A bit quirky, but quite different to your regular means of watering the garden. Hibbitt offer a range of recycled tyre swings including horses, rodeo, an elephant and this motorbike which I'm sure would appeal to any child. Not the most attractive of swings, but a bit of fun and great for a children's play area. My last pick is this stone apple from Garden Art which would look great as a centre piece in a kitchen garden. Garden Art offers an extensive range of planters, statuary and urns, among other things, so if this isn't quite your thing I'm certain you'll be able to find something that you do like.
