The Son of Man, 1964 By: Rene Magritte Magritte painted The Son of Man, or Le fils de l’homme, as a self-portrait. The painting depicts a man in a suit with a bowler hat; his face is mostly obscured by a green apple. The theme of the art work is a conflict between that which is visible and that which is hidden. The parts of a person we want to see is often obscured by what is visible.

The Son of Man (French: Le fils de l'homme) is a 1964 painting by the Belgian surrealist painter René Magritte. Another subtle feature is that the man's left arm appears to bend backwards at the elbow.

Always loved this: take something so normal and mundane, the image of a man in a suit, and then completely change it with something as simple and common in paintings, an apple | The Son of Man (French: Le fils de l'homme) is a 1964 painting by the Belgian surrealist painter René Magritte.

"It is a union that suggests the essential mystery of the world. Art for me is not an end in itself, but a means of evoking that mystery." — René Magritte on putting seemingly unrelated objects together in juxtaposition. | Magritte's work frequently displays a collection of ordinary objects in an unusual context, giving new meanings to familiar things. The use of objects as other than what they seem is typified in his painting . . .

Ses peintures jouent souvent sur le décalage entre un objet et sa représentation. Ses peintures jouent souvent sur le décalage entre un objet et sa représentation.
René Magritte, La Reproduction interdite, 1937 "This can be seen as Magritte saying that art shouldn’t be considered as the reproduction of reality. We’ve seen that everything is subjective, however I think it is even more difficult to be objective about ourselves. I see in this painting an affirmation that one can never see oneself in one’s entirety. Who we are, who we appear to be and who we think we are are three different things." source: https://brendandonnet.wordpress.com
La Reproduction Interdite (1937). Rene’ Magritte (1898-1967). Surrealism. Museum Boijmans van Beuningen. Rotterdam. Surrealist patron Edward James allowed Magritte to stay rent free in his London home and paint. James is featured in La Reproduction Interdite, an oil painting also known as Not to be Reproduced. During 1947-48, Magritte lived by producing fake Picassos, Braques and Chiricos, a fraudulent repertoire he was later to expand to forged banknotes during the lean postwar period.

Fine Art by Rene Magritte - "Dangerous Liaisons," oil on canvas, 72cm X 64cm, 1926. This is an interesting painting. I like how the artist distorted the body using a mirror- could definitely use this as a source of inspiration for the gesture/identity drawing.
“Les Liaisons Dangereuses”, René Magritte, 1936. "...an enigmatic painting thought to have been inspired by the eighteenth century French novel of the same name, in which two rival lovers deploy sex as a weapon to humiliate others.
