Better yet: Make it a full pocket door, BUT, cut the door in half and install hardware that will allow you to open just the bottom; think Dutch door... for the next house you build - Pocket gate for kids or pets. One of the best ideas I've ever seen. I could see doing this instead of a baby gate between the kitchen and living room area or the basement stairs etc.

great for clearing table quickly and knowing where it is. This is brilliant! Perfect for the kids

A secured-to-the-wall half door instead of a wedged in baby gate. Interesting. Bonus is that it doesn't have to be permanent if you don't want it to be...unscrew it, patch things up. Voila!
