    Jesus Loves Me!

  • Sursum Corda ...

"Jesus is my savior not my religion." For Catholics, these two things are inseparable: if you believe that Jesus Christ is your Lord and Savior, then it begs the question of what that even means. "Jesus Saves!" Catholicism says "okay, but go deeper": Yes, but HOW? ...and through and with what means? What DID Jesus do? Furthermore, how do we access the grace that God wants to give us through Jesus? (the part of the Catholic Mass that goes "through him, with him, and in him; in the unity of the Holy Spirit; all glory and honor is yours, Almighty Father, forever and ever..." will provide some clues and food for thought). Also, for Catholics, our religion is an outward expression of the spiritual reality in and on which it is based and how it works: Lex orandi, lex credendi-- "the law of prayer is the law of belief." "Jesus" and "my religion" are therefore not mutually exclusive in Catholicism; they are mutually reinforcing. Our religion is a commentary on and also the means through which "Jesus Saves." How is it that Jesus "draws all men to himself" when he is lifted up from the Earth? His Church. The Sacraments. The Eucharist. How do we know of this? The Bible, and its proper context of interpretation, the Church's Sacred Tradition.

Today I came to the realization that life in and of itself truly is a personal ministry. Every day is a test of personal faith; personal commitment to using our uniquely given purpose to build the Kingdom of God; and a personal reflection of how we use our tongue towards one another, either to edify or tear down. It's all about ministry and relationships, i.e., ministering to self and others without ceasing.

There was a point when I realized that every rebellious path my "you can't tell me what to do" heart led me down had left me sad and broken. That moment is when I first understood this verse.

Philippians 3:8 (HCSB) 8 More than that, I also consider everything to be a loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. Because of Him I have suffered the loss of all things and consider them filth, so that I may gain Christ
