Liz Taylor Beautiful Woman.......
Fifties hair for women was a symbol of the more established gender roles that came to define the decade. Pompadours were still popular in the fifties which carried over from the forties. Curls were popular, especially short hair. Movie stars such as Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe helped ushered in this soft, feminine look for women. Those who had long straight hair would curl their long locks. Naturally straight hair would not become popular until the late sixties and seventies. Fifties hair for women was pristine and signified a very standard of beauty for women of the decade. Women’s hairstyle is always a reflection of a given society. Usually soft, curly hairdos with grandiose pompadours are signatures of societies which emphasized more rigid gender roles, decades in which women were home-makers while the men went off to work such as the fifties. A perfect description of fifties hair for women was soft, delicate curly and short. Hair was pinned back and held in place by a chiffon scarf. Fifties hair followed in the tradition of holding hair in place through pin curling and rolling. Just like the forties, women kept their in place by leaving in curlers over night and reserved for extra styling in the morning. The fifties was also the first decade in which women needed to visit the hair salon’s regularly to keep up their hair. Updos were quite popular in the form of beehive hairstyles and other updos that would set the stage for bouffant in the coming sixties.

elizabeth taylor, such a classic beauty
What a face! What a life! For some reason it feels like the end of an era as the last of the great movie stars shrugs off this mortal coil. It's impossible to write about Elizabeth Taylor without hyperbole. The MOST beautiful, the MOST grotesque, the MOST married, the MOST scandalous, the MOST tragic. She was a monster and a saint and an icon. The idea of a movie star made flesh. I don't think there was a moment in my life when I didn't know who she was. Growing up, we had that Life magazine Movie book - full of pictures of movie stars and films. I spent hours and hours and hours gazing at this book and it had untold influence on me. I knew who all these old time movie stars were from their extraordinary faces long before I saw any of their films. Lots, of course, were of Liz. I remember a lovely picture of her at 17 in a gold dress that I thought was just the loveliest thing I'd ever seen. Beauty is destiny. Being the MOST beautiful is such a crazy double edged sword and Liz certainly had the best and some of the worst of it. Have I mentioned she was also an actress? I saw her in Jane Eyre, Lassie Come Home and National Velvet when I was little. And then A Place in the Sun, Butterfield 8 (which is also a really good novel that no one but me seems to have read), Giant, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. I mean, what a run! Then Cleopatra and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf. Just awesome. Then, late in life, she nearly single handedly created a national dialogue and awareness of AIDS after the death of her friend and co-star Rock Hudson. There are a lot of adults alive right now who probably don't remember the complete silence surrounding homosexuality in general and AIDS in particular. Liz Taylor did a great deal of very effective work to change that. If you would like to make a donation to amfAR, which Liz helped found, click here. To quote myself: What a life! What a dame! Elizabeth Taylor Dress
As I look forward to seeing the red carpet and acceptance speeches at the Oscar's this evening, what better time to look back at the fashion's that have come before. A '30s fashion moment for Helen Hayes, Best Actress winner for The Sin of Madelon Claudet at the 5th Annual Academy Awards. Hayes' elegant black sleeveless gown was a creation accented with satin gloves and a corsage. The Oscar backdrop was the Ambassador Hotel, just days after the election of FDR. Maureen O'Hara kicked up the glam for the first ceremony held at the Shrine Auditorium at the 19th Annual Academy Awards. Her black satin strapless gown had a touch of lace, and was luxuriously accented with a shimmering sequined fur stole and muff. A braided hairpiece ribbon necklace and gave her a signature look formal touch. SOPHIA LOREN at the 30th Annual Academy Awards was regal in a silk damask ballgown seamed and fitted at the waist. A tiara completed the look for this royal Italian beauty. The simplicity of a draped neckline and waist Complemented dazzling diamond earrings in ELIZABETH Taylor's elegant look at the 32nd Annual Academy Awards. Bring on the curves and glam. At the height of the disco era and 51st Academy Awards, Mia Farrow attended the Oscars in a white halter gown with a glittery flame accent. A sheer stole, teardrop pendant, and box-style purse were her accessories of choice. At the dawn of a new decade, GOLDIE HAWN earned an Oscar nomination for PRIVATE BENJAMIN and represented the bold fashion times in black satin with pink polka dots and voluminous ruffles. All these ladies have a few things in common. Other than the obvious talent these ladies have at their craft, they all look like movie stars. What do you think? xo, Christina All photos found at Oscar.com

By Jessica Miller Elizabeth Taylor was an American actress and a film icon from the classic Hollywood era. The Hollywood legend was well known for her violet eyes that stood out as much as her beauty and talent. In fact, she had a "genetic mutation," also known as distichiasis, which means that she had an extra set of eyelashes. The accessory row of eyelashes captivated Taylor's deep violet eyes and gave the effect of wearing an intense mascara. On the set of Roddy McDowall, Elizabeth Taylor, only 13, someone said "Get that girl off the set- she has too much eye make-up on, too much mascara," recalls J Randy Taraborelli's biography of Taylor. (Only later did they find out on the set that Liz had no mascara on but a double set of eye lashes.) Below you will find some photos that managed to capture her trademark-her amazing violet eyes.
