Good Carbs vs. Bad Carbs [infographic]. Adam and I are doing low carb. We do not eat pasta or bread or potatoes. Most of our carbs come from milk, nuts or vegtables. We have been doing this since January and we have lost a combined 50lbs (32/24). My skin as cleared up, I no longer have stomach aches and my head aches have vanished. In addition we cut out most sugar. We do have our cheat days, but replacing sugar with stuff like stevia and palm sugar which has a lower glycemic index helps too.

Carbohydrates are the main energy source for our bodies. Is important to understand the difference between healthy and unhealthy carbs. Consuming too many "bad" carbs and not enough "good" carbs causes weight gain, impedes weight loss and can put one at risk for various illnesses and diseases. This infographic entitled "Good Carbs, Bad Carbs and the Ugly Truth About Your Diet" is a very simple, yet informative, illustration of healthy and unhealthy carbohydrates, the Glycemic Index (GI) and the Glycemic Load (GL). In summary: Bad Carbohydrates are refined and processed and are absorbed by the digestive system quickly, which causes blood sugar level to spike. This, in turn, causes the body to store excessive sugar as fat. Processed, junk and fast foods (like soda, cereals and white bread) are typically loaded with bad carbs. Good Carbohydrates are unrefined and unprocessed and contain dietary fiber. They are absorbed by the digestive system gradually and do not cause blood sugar level spikes. Just about anyone trying to lose weight, including belly fat, knows that Trans Fat and Saturated Fat is unhealthy and a dieter's enemy. What about Monounsaturated and Polyunsaturated Fats, i.e., MUFAs and PUFAs, respectively? Let's face it, Americans are addicted to sugar and that is one of the reasons why we are so fat and unhealthy. The average American consumes 22.2 teaspoons of sugar a day. That is nearly 89 grams (3.14 ounces) and four times the recommended amount for women (20 grams), two times the recommended amount for men (36 grams) and eight times the recommended amount for children (12 grams). Unfortunately, sugar is in just about everything we eat. Sometimes it is obvious, like in a can of soda, a sugary cookie or candy. Other times, it is not quite so obvious, like in milk or carrots. People who are trying to lose weight (including that dangerous belly fat) are told to avoid sugar. And, this is good advise for everyone, not just for those concerned about weight loss. But it is important to distinguish between the naturally occurring sugar found in healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, beans and other plants and the unhealthy sugar that is added to various foods, like breakfast cereals, white bread, snacks, junk and processed food. A person who eats a balanced, whole food, plant-based diet and avoids processed, junk and fast food, rarely needs to worry about his or her intake of naturally occurring sugar found in wholesome foods like fruit. Not only do we always wonder how long food is good for but also what are the staples when it comes to clean eating and what foods should we eat and how many times a day!!! Check out these hand tips to keep you on track and to ease the anxiety of eating the right kind of foods to get the results that you want!!!!! People ask me all the time what should they buy at the grocery store! While this list is comphrehsive I would suggest sitting down each week and designating a planning day. Make your meal plan and grocery list at the same time then you only buy what you need for the week! It takes the ease out of spending to much money and then foods won't go bad because you plan on using them all!!! Battling sugar cravings is by far the absolute worst thing to go through. Whether you quite sugar cold turkey or you slowly cut it out there are withdrawal symptoms. A lot of times you have a headache, feel sluggish or in a fog! For me it was a little grumpiness and headache. It was sheer will power and the desire to change that brought me through!! But this chart is a great way for all of you visual learners out there to make some sense out of your cravings. If you can distract yourself, make some green tea and get busy most of the time you can avoid the cravings!!!
