Remove the orchid from its store-bought pot. I like to give the plant a fresh start by cleaning off the roots under running water. The roots are usually pretty compacted, so do so very gently and be careful not to break any of them — the running water will help loosen the moss and/or bark you are getting rid of. If you notice any dead roots (black and hollow), now is a good time to remove them.

Another thing I'd like to do with the moss collection I seem to be developing... A container from Salvation Army/Value World would be nice to start with; they always have a ton.

These stunning glass terrariums feature found treasures of the north woods. Fresh live fern moss, river stones, knotty wood, and large pine cones all placed aesthetically in a multi-layer process. As the pine cones dry they will open naturally. The tall apothecary jar measures 16" high by 3.5" wide, the medium is 14" high by 5" wide, and the shortest measures 11" high by 6" wide.
