The Invention of Hugo Cabret - Brian Selznick When twelve-year-old Hugo, an orphan living and repairing clocks within the walls of a Paris train station in 1931, meets a mysterious toyseller and his goddaughter, his undercover life and his biggest secret are jeopardized. 625 pg. ; hardcover ONLY ; Grades 3-6
I loved this illustrated novel. I think it stands out to me because it is so different from other kids books. There isn't much writing; the 527 page book consists of many detail-filled illustrations that seem to come to life on the page and capture you in the story. If you haven't read the Invention of Hugo Cabret, I would highly recommend you read it as soon as you can.
The Invention of Hugo Cabret is a lovely homage to early French film making and a most creative book. Part novel and part picture book, the story lends to reading aloud while discovering together how Brian Selznick uses images to tell the story. Erik Wecks
The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick is the story of a young orphan, thief and clock-maker who lives in a Paris train station. His greatest desire is to bring his late father’s small automaton back in working order, an objective which ends up launching him into an adventure during the course of which he encounters many fascinating characters.
The Invention of Hugo Cabret - Brian Selznick ★★★★☆ // Chapter book - deceptively thick book with lots of breathtaking illustrations. We read it with our soon-to-be kindergartener, but it would be better for slightly older kids.
HEPL Staff Review of The Invention of Hugo Cabret. "Brian Selznick masterfully illustrated and wrote this interesting story that reads like a cross between a traditional children’s novel and a graphic fiction novel. In this story, Hugo, a 12 year old orphan, is taken in by his uncle and learns how to manage the clocks at a busy Paris train station in the early 1930’s."
The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick, 2008 Caldecott Medal Winner. Orphan, clock keeper, thief: Hugo lives in the walls of a busy Paris train station, where his survival depends on secrets and anonymity. Combining elements of picture book, graphic novel, and film, Caldecott Honor artist Selznick breaks open the novel form to create an entirely new reading experience in this intricate, tender and spellbinding mystery.
The Invention of Hugo Cabret: In this intense, captivating children’s book, an orphan boy named Hugo Cabret secretly maintains a clock at a Paris railroad station. His father had been killed in a fire while repairing an automaton- a complex robot designed to look and write like a human. Hugo salvages the parts and steals machinery in attempt to finish it. He is convinced that, when it is done, it will write him a message from his father. When he crosses paths with another orphan, Isabelle, whose god father Hugo has been stealing parts from, things become even more complex. It is a beautiful story of redemption and reconciling with painful pasts.

I remember as a young kid being intrigued by the dust cover to my older sister’s first edition copy of A Wrinkle in Time. The dark, storm blue background with a series of concentric circles surrounding three silhouetted figures may have been simple, but it set up a beguiling whirl of mystery...
Wrinkle in Time is one of my all time favorites! Books to read to them, before they turn 10. Looks like a super list--so many were among my favs, and are already among theirs. We have some reading to do--I may put these on a schedule now!

Inkheart by Cornelia Funke. This is a young adult fantasy novel (the first book of the Inkheart trilogy). After her father reads from the book "Inkheart", a fictional evil character appears. Maggie must go on an adventure, they type you read about in books. This story will get students involved in reading. Since it is only a trilogy, the student will not get bored with the series.
Inkheart by Cornelia Funke. This is one of my all-time favorite book covers and stories. I bought this hardcover edition even though the paperback was much cheaper because the paperback edition used a different cover.
Inkheart by: Cornelia Funke The first book in the Inkheart series. Genre: Fantasy. The words "bringing a character to life" take on a whole new meaning in this amazing novel.
Inkheart; book 1 in the Inkworld trilogy; written by Cornelia Funke and translated from German.
Inkheart, by Cornelia Funke- a second Funke book in my top ten Classics, Inkheart opened up the world of books to me in early high school. Reading about the worlds encased between two book covers was the beginning of my realisation that books cannot be judged by just the covers; they must be read whether you think it is your style or not. Funke's passion for the world of literature is oozing from this book, and her love became contagious the more I raced through her books.

I think my first encounter with James and the Giant Peach was in 5th grade, when my teacher read it aloud to the class, and it hooked me on Roald Dahl. While I do love the original illustrations by Nancy Berkert, I'm also partial to Lane Smith's quirky versions as well. But regardless of which pictures accompany it, it's a fantastic story.

Read this to my kids this year. I had never read it before. Not my fave kids book but they seemed to like it :)
James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl - Was my childhood favorite book. It is the reason I am an avid reader to this day.
I typically read a children's book in between heavier "big girl" books, to come down from some pretty intense subjects. This was one of my pick me up reads,...a blast to read I highly recommend it to all ages!!

Cover of one of my favourites books - Walter Moers "The City of Dreaming Books" (english edition)
4/5 ✦ - Finished 18 Jan 2015. The 3rd in the Zamonia series. I had been waiting to read this book for YEARS. The title first intrigued me, and I bought & read the first two in 2009, but only got round to this one now! And it really is every bookworm's dream novel. (Bookling might be more apt!) Great for writers, too. Moers is amazing at worldbuilding and wordplay, and his characters always fascinate. Loved it. | The City of Dreaming Books by Walter Moers

book list-I've read most, so I can honestly agree these are very good books for children and adults!
Must read book list - includes Harold and the Purple Crayon, Where the Wild Things Are, The Phantom Tollbooth, The Stinky Cheeseman, Corduroy, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, The Lorax, The Velveteen Rabbit, The Little Prince, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, and others :)
I have read all but two of these. There are only a few I would definitely add to the list and probably only one or two I would remove from "essential" reading, but keep if we were putting together a top 100 book list. These really are important books for children!
Pinner before:Reading plays an important part in a child's development. Children who live in a print-rich environment are more likely to learn how to read on schedule and have a richer vocabulary.Children's books contain 50% more rare words than primetime television? As essential as early literacy is, the wealth of children's literature that we have available to choose from can be overwhelming. HPB was consulted and asked:What do you consider to be some of the best children's books ever written?

I could write on forever about this book. This is my second favorite book I've read so far. You will fall in love once again with Tobias Eaton. Yes, this book is kind of like the hunger games but it's better. Divergent by Veronica Roth.
February Reading List | Divergent (Veronica Roth): There are several young adult series popular today exploring dystopian themes i.e. Hunger Games. This book by Roth takes place in a post-apocalyptic Chicago divided into five factions based on characteristics admired by society. I have a feeling I will read all 3 books (Divergent, Insurgent, and Allegiant) in a week.
Need a new "Hunger Games" fix? Try "Divergent" by Veronica Roth! It's another YA book, but I couldn't put it down.
book review Divergent by Veronica Roth; YA dystopian literature--THIS ONE IS GOOD! If you liked The Hunger Games, this is for you.
Divergent by Veronica Roth Just finished this and really liked it. If you're coming down from a Hunger Games high and want something similar this is a great read. I would actually almost compare it more to a Hunger Games/Matrix hybrid. My favorite part of the current crop of YA books is the strong heroines. Beatrice may be even tougher than Katniss.
Divergent by Veronica Roth. To fill (and maybe overflow!) the void left by the conclusion of The Hunger Games. On my to read list
Teen readers across the country choose “Divergent” by Veronica Roth as their favorite book in the annual Teens’ Top Ten vote, sponsored by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA).
