Brian Selznick, Train Station, Cabret Brian, Favorite Book, Children S Books, Kids Book, Hugo Cabret, Picture Book
I loved this illustrated novel. I think it stands out to me because it is so different from other kids books. There isn't much writing; the 527 page book consists of many detail-filled illustrations that seem to come to life on the page and capture you in the story. If you haven't read the Invention of Hugo Cabret, I would highly recommend you read it as soon as you can.
The Invention of Hugo Cabret, Brian Selznick Part novel, part picture book, completely gorgeous, and featuring one of the most charming mini miscreants of recent memory. Read it before you let your kids watch the film.
The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick (An orphan clock-winder, 1931 Paris lad Hugo, steals to eat and repair robot from father's notebook, until he meets Méliès' pretty god-daughter Isabelle, accompanied by a helpful film student Etienne. An unusual blend of graphic novel and history lesson results.)
HEPL Staff Review of The Invention of Hugo Cabret. "Brian Selznick masterfully illustrated and wrote this interesting story that reads like a cross between a traditional children’s novel and a graphic fiction novel. In this story, Hugo, a 12 year old orphan, is taken in by his uncle and learns how to manage the clocks at a busy Paris train station in the early 1930’s."
The Invention of Hugo Cabret - Brian Selznick When twelve-year-old Hugo, an orphan living and repairing clocks within the walls of a Paris train station in 1931, meets a mysterious toyseller and his goddaughter, his undercover life and his biggest secret are jeopardized. 625 pg. ; hardcover ONLY ; Grades 3-6
The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick, 2008 Caldecott Medal Winner. Orphan, clock keeper, thief: Hugo lives in the walls of a busy Paris train station, where his survival depends on secrets and anonymity. Combining elements of picture book, graphic novel, and film, Caldecott Honor artist Selznick breaks open the novel form to create an entirely new reading experience in this intricate, tender and spellbinding mystery.
The invention of Hugo Cabret - Brian Selznick. Orphan, clock keeper and thief, 12-year-old Hugo lives in the walls of a busy Paris train station, where his survival depends on secrets and anonymity. But when his world suddenly interlocks with a girl and the owner of a small toy booth in the train station, Hugo’s undercover life, and his most precious secret, are put in jeopardy. A cryptic drawing, a treasured notebook, a stolen key, a mechanical man, and a hidden message all come together.
The Invention of Hugo Cabret: In this intense, captivating children’s book, an orphan boy named Hugo Cabret secretly maintains a clock at a Paris railroad station. His father had been killed in a fire while repairing an automaton- a complex robot designed to look and write like a human. Hugo salvages the parts and steals machinery in attempt to finish it. He is convinced that, when it is done, it will write him a message from his father. When he crosses paths with another orphan, Isabelle, whose god father Hugo has been stealing parts from, things become even more complex. It is a beautiful story of redemption and reconciling with painful pasts.
The Invention of Hugo Cabret one of my favorite books!

Worth Reading, Margaret Mitchell, Civil War, Books Books, Favorite Books, Favorite Movie, Time Favorite, Gone With The Wind
Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell ~ Until recently, this was my all-time favorite book, but is now a close second. Not much can compare to the story of Scarlett and her life journey through the Civil War and Reconstruction. The characters, places, and times just come alive as you read!
My all time favorite book and movie. In 1936 Margaret Mitchell publishes Gone with the Wind. Three years later it hits the silver screen, starring Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh.
Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchel. After the Civil War sweeps away the genteel life to which she has been accustomed, Scarlett O'Hara sets about to salvage her plantation home
Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell // Explores the depth of human passions with an intensity as bold as its setting in the red hills of Georgia. It vividly depicts the drama of the Civil War and Reconstruction. This is the tale of Scarlett O’Hara, the spoiled, manipulative daughter of a wealthy plantation owner, who arrives at young womanhood just in time to see the Civil War forever change her way of life.
Margaret Mitchell's "Gone with the Wind" is probably 1 of my top 5 favorite books I've read

I was sitting on a comfy chair alone in my living room when i read Dumbledore died. I started crying and had to set the book down for a moment. My dad walked by and saw me crying and asked what was wrong. I blubbered "Dumbledore died". He couldnt understand me so I repeated myself. He said oh someone from your book and moved on. I was so mad!

A Wrinkle in Time -- Madeleine L'Engle . . . Every human 15 and older vanishes, and the town and surrounding areas (later named the FAYZ) are encased within an impenetrable bubble. Many of the people and wildlife develop supernatural powers. Reading to children, even before they can understand words, teaches them to associate books with love and affection.

I remember reading research that said reading to children at an early age is one of the only definitive predictors of later success in school (and life?). "Reading to children, even before they can understand words, teaches them to associate books with love and affection". I swear, I'll read to my children every day without fail, forget the TV, they'll have books.
Reading. I firmly believe in this, and worked hard to instill a love for reading in both my children. Read to them from the very beginning and they will love and appreciate the adventures that literature opens them up to!
"Reading to children, even before they can understand words, teaches them to associate books with love and affection". This is exactly why I read to all of my children when they were young...all the time.
Did this with both my children. We love reading. It is a nice time together too :)
Or, in other words, corrupt them early (heh heh). ;D |Books||Reading||Kids|

There are few writers of any kind of fiction today that even come close to the quality of Neil Gaiman's work. When Coraline steps through a door in her family's new house, she finds another house, strangely similar to her own (only better). At first, things seem marvelous. The food is better than at home, and the toy box is filled with fluttering wind-up angels and dinosaur skulls that crawl and rattle their teeth. But there's another mother there and another father, and they want her to stay and be their little girl. Release date: Feb 2009

Scale 1-10: 9 SO GLAD I READ THIS BEFORE THE MOVIE CAME OUT, MUCHHHH BETTER THAN THE MOVIE. Page turner, suspenseful. PLOT TWIST LIKE OMG. Unconventional ending. Great book.
Best book I've read in 2014 by far! Gillian Flynn created such a twisted, crazy character of Amy Dunne. Loved every word from beginning to end. Awesome thriller!
Gone girl makes you question everything and everyone. The characters are so well written that you don't know whether you should pity them or hate them. By the end you don't even know what you read. Which makes it a great book for a book club.
What a page turner. Totally amazing and just plot twist after plot twist. Wish I'd listened to @sabuttil and read it sooner!!! I am curious to see how they do the movie.
Loved either the book and the movie. Although the book drags you inside the characters better. Still hope Flynn writes a sequel of it
Bought the book last year, piled it onto my reading list, sounds amazing!

I love all of Kate Morton's novels but this one is my favorite. She writes mystery novels that rely heavily on flashing forward and back in time in the UK. They are all slightly Gothic, painstakingly plotted, and romantic to some degree. I highly recommend them to Anglophiles and mystery/romance lovers everywhere.
