Tostones are made from sliced green plantains cut either length-wise or width-wise and are fried for one to two minutes on each side until they are golden in color, and removed and patted for excess oil. Afterwards, they are pounded flat with a utensil called a "tostonera", or any kitchen utensil that has a large enough flat surface. The plantains are then fried once again until they are crisp and golden brown. Tostones are salted and eaten much like potato chips/crisps or French fries/chips.

Golfeados, Golfeados are Venezuelan sweet rolls, and they have two key ingredients that are both simple and inspired: papelón (the molasses-like by product of sugar cane processing), and queso llanero, a white salty cheese. Both are rolled up inside an anise-flavored sweet roll dough, then baked, drizzled with syrup made from the papelón, and sprinkled with more grated cheese. Genius!
