From the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge The Atchafalaya Basin, or Atchafalaya Swamp, is the largest swamp in the United States. The Atchafalaya Basin Bridge is a pair of parallel bridges in the US state of Louisiana between Baton Rouge and Lafayette which carries Interstate 10 over the Atchafalaya Basin. With a total length of 96,095 feet (29,290 m) or 18.2 miles, it is the fourteenth longest bridge in the world by total length.
Avery Island salt mine. Haunting // Avery Island is one of five salt dome islands rising above the flat Louisiana Gulf Coast. These islands formed over the eons when alluvial sediment covered a vast plain of salt left behind by an ancient saltwater ocean. Surrounded by low-lying swamps and marshes, Avery Island stands at 163 feet above mean sea level. About 140 miles west of New Orleans, Avery Island is near New Iberia, Louisiana.
