1850 British Tiara at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London - From the curators' comments: "Wreaths of flowers and foliage were in fashion throughout the 19th century. Sometimes they included real flowers, or artificial ones made of fabric, wax or porcelain. Here the flowers and foliage consist of diamonds and pearls. At Queen Victoria’s coronation, her attendants wore wreaths of silver corn-ears."

Diadem - Amethysts, diamonds, set in platinum, made by Cartier Paris, circa 1900. Amethyst: purple is the colour royalty; amethyst has been an insignia of power. Amethyst were favoured by Egyptian royalty & Catherine the Great of Russia. Feature also in the British Crown Jewels. Amethyst is referred to "the stone of bishops" in the Church. The Greek word "amethystos" translates into "not drunken" and it was often worn as an amulet to protect against intoxication.
This tiara was made in 1999 by David Thomas of Asprey and Garrard using four detachable anthemions from Queen Victoria's regal circlet.

Queen Alexandra’s Amethyst Tiara Queen Alexandra (the Queen-Consort of England who came before Mary of Teck) also had an amethyst tiara that wasn’t without its intrigue. These amethysts were also gifts from a Tsar: Alexander III After Alix’s husband King Edward VII died in 1910, she became more and more solitary and quite uninterested in jeweled finery. The now-Dowager Queen was so disinterested that Alix died without a will. It’s generally believed her children divided her jewellery among themselves. Queen Alexandra’s eldest daughter, Louise, Princess Royal and Duchess of Fife had taken the amethyst tiara as well as a sapphire necklace also gifted by Tsar Alexander III. Princess Louise finally passed the Alix’s Amethyst tiara down to her second daughter Maud of Fife, who became Countess of Southesk upon her marriage to Charles Carnegie, 11th Earl of Southesk. Most other sources agree that Maud may have worn the tiara a few times before selling it at auction on June 26, 1946. In addition to the Mystery Amethyst Tiara, several other pieces of Alix’s jewellery were auctioned at Christie’s. The tiara fetched a mere £1750. Now, of course, there’s a new mystery surrounding Alix’s Amethyst tiara: who has it now?
