Edward VIII, Duke of Windsor (1894–1972) & Wallis Simpson, American socialite (1896- 1986). King Edward abdicated the British crown (after reigning nearly a year) on 11 Dec 1936, so that he could marry Wallis. She was not an acceptable candidate for a king's wife ~ not only because she was an American, but also because she was a married woman, already once divorced. Edward married Simpson on 3 Jun 1937.
