Twenty years after Carson’s sign-off, “American Masters” offfers a bittersweet look at the man who mapped the turf upon which the “late-night wars” would be forever waged.

"Johnny Carson: The King of Late Night" (120 minutes) premieres on PBS' "American Masters" at 9:00pm Monday, May 14th (check local listings). The film will also be released on DVD and Blu-ray on July 17th. As I reflect on my life, I grow increasingly grateful for having witnessed the greatest half-century in the history of the United States. Consider just a few of the crucial events that have shaped us during the past 50 years: The civil rights movements for African-Americans, women and the disabled; the assassinations of JFK, MLK and RFK; the war in Vietnam and its domestic fallout; landing on the moon and exploring the outer reaches of the universe; the global trauma of AIDS and seemingly perpetual threats of war and terrorism; and, perhaps most important, the emergence and meteoric rise of the digital age, exemplified by the Internet and social media with the power to literally change history through an exponential expansion of human connectedness. If you've witnessed these decades through the multicolored lenses of popular culture, the rewards have been astonishing. Consider the careers we've seen in that time: Dylan, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Neil Young, Springsteen, Madonna, The Clash, U2, Nirvana... Don Rickles, Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Eddie Murphy, Tina Fey... Clint Eastwood, Martin Scorsese, Dustin Hoffman, Meryl Streep, Steven Spielberg, Werner Herzog... We could all make our own long lists and we'd all arrive at the same conclusion: The past half-century has been nothing short of phenomenal. And one way or another, it all comes down to "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson."

"I am taking the applause sign home, putting it in the bedroom." ~ Johnny Carson, The Tonight Show, May 22, 1992. (final show)
Johnny Carson begins a 30-year reign as host of the "Tonight Show." The future of late night television seemed in doubt when network executives give a young comedian named Johnny Carson a shot at hosting the "Tonight Show." Five years later, nearly everyone was talking about whatever happened the night before on "the Carson show." Johnny remained the undisputed leader of late night television until he retired. - 1962.
Johnny Carson - October 23, 1925 – January 23, 2005. In1992 Johnny Carson hosted NBC's Tonight Show for the last time. For more than 30 years Carson developed his perfect stage presence. From his opening comic monologue & golf swing to his attention to comic details; like timing, delivery & gestures, as well as his fair treatment of guests, made him a natural host. Carson believed that if the guest sparkled, so would the show.
Johnny Carson was the king of late night TV. This was the first tv show I saw in color.

"The future does not belong to those who are content with today, apathetic toward common problems and their fellow man alike, timid and fearful in the face of bold projects and new ideas. Rather, it will belong to those who can blend passion, reason and courage in a personal commitment to the great enterprises and ideals of American society. " Robert Kennedy

Robert F. Kennedy (pictured), a politician and prominent member of the famed Kennedy family, was an undaunting champion of civil rights. On May 27, 1968, Kennedy gave a radio interview to "Voice Of America," the largest U.S. international broadcaster, when he was the Attorney General in his brother's, President John F. Kennedy's, administration. During his interview, as he pointed out all of the imperfections in America's fabric regarding equal rights for Blacks, did he in fact make a bold proclamation that he envisioned an African American occupying the same Oval Office that his brother once did?

"For the great enemy of truth is very often not the lie — deliberate, contrived and dishonest — but the myth — persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic. Too often we hold fast to the clichés of our forebears. We subject all facts to a prefabricated set of interpretations. We enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought." -- President John F. Kennedy
