James Baldwin Homes, 131st Street and 5th Ave., Harlem; 81 Horatio St., New York City    Baldwin wrote about homosexuality and bisexuality at a time when most were afraid to do so, although he is perhaps best known for his works dealing with race, such as Notes of a Native Son. He was born in 1924 at a house that stood on a Harlem intersection. Many of his works, such as Giovanni’s Room, were groundbreaking in their graphic depictions of gay life.

James Baldwin was an essayist, playwright and novelist regarded as a highly insightful, iconic writer with works like The Fire Next Time and Another Country.
