This statue is located inside the historic fire station of the Centennial Village of the Brown County Fairgrounds in Aberdeen, South Dakota. It is dedicated to the Native Americans of the Mount Rushmore State. Carved in 1981, it is one of a series of large wooden carvings called the Whispering Giants by sculptor Peter Toth of Hungary.
Yellow Cedar, Abalone. This paddle shows the loon, a bird traditionally connected to the undersea kingdom in Kwakwaka’wakw mythology. Henderson’s work is synonymous with classic Kwakwaka’wakw style of carving and painting: deeply carved outlines and richly painted formlines.
