#### Four fold foldables

#### 4 fold ideas

#### I’ve been using foldables almost for everything in my English language classes. I work with them vocabulary, grammar, sentences, the four skills, fine motor skills... But the most important thing is that it brings lots of interaction to the class, that it is probably the core of the language skills in Primary ESL education. “Foldables” are basically 3 D graphic organizers or 3 D mind maps. They are great tools to help English Language Learners (and all students) categorize content in a way to make it more visible and accessible to them. ”One-dimensional” graphic organizers are equally useful, but foldables generally provide space for more content and are better mind organizers. There is one very easy foldable that I use in Year 4 classes to work the topic “House” and the instructional language. Once students know how to fold and cut the paper, they work in pairs and explain how to do a paper house. They can take photos or make drawings to illustrate the clear instructions they have written. At the end some make a little booklet, some others make a display or a poster and, the “techy” ones make a PowerPoint. There are lots of resources pages in the net about foldables and you can find the one that exactly fits to your needs. I would like to suggest you some. These are my favourites: First ( great discover!) the Pinterest board about foldables of Lora Drum. More than 350 pins about this topic, but you will find boards about scrapbooking, classroom ideas, crafts, literacy and much more. Foldables and Notebookables LiveBinder.com from “TeachFine”. Lots of suggestions and proposals for notebooking, scrapbooking, for different topics and subjects. ELL Classroom has several blog posts describing their use of foldables with English Language Learners. Awesome Foldables Wiki Reading and Study Skills Foldables Using foldables in the classroom a blog of Melinda Sprinkle Making Books.com by Susan Kapusinsky. #### The first foldable for next fall has been made! The first lesson that I teach in my algebra text is on sets and real numbers. When I think about classifying real numbers I always get the image of nesting cups that you used to be able to buy for toddlers. I wanted to somehow bring that idea to the foldable that we made for this part of the lesson. Now, I have seen the traditional Venn diagram of the sets. My problem with it is that I have noticed that my kiddos have trouble picturing the sets of numbers and being within each other. They often forget that 7 is an real number, rational number, integer, whole number, and natural number. They will usually just say that it is a whole number. I wanted them to see that whole numbers contain the set of natural numbers in a way that was different from the traditional diagram. So I started by folding a piece of paper in half and putting real numbers on the outside of it. When the students open the foldable they see that real numbers contain the set of rational and irrational numbers. Now I realize that not all of the sets show up at once. That is what I am going for. Rational numbers have many subsets. So to show that rational numbers hold the integers, the students have to lift the flap. Continue opening the flaps and you will see all of the subsets appear. In each flap, I have the definition of the set, examples of what is included, and non-examples to try and help the classification process happen smoother. Just through the assembly of this foldable there are so many opportunities to reinforce that a natural number is also a whole number or that a negative number is part of the integer, rational, and real numbers, but doesn't fit the definition of a whole or natural number. I also like that it shows that the set of rational numbers holds integers, whole numbers, and natural numbers, but not irrational numbers. Yet, at the same time, the kiddos see that real numbers hold rational and irrational. Update: I added this post to the Interactive Linky Party at 4mulaFun.com (http://www.4mulafun.com/). Go and check it out for some other great ideas related to INB! (8-10-14) I was going through Pinterest and I came across this slideshare at http://www.slideshare.net/ProfessaX06/real-number-system-foldable-5151675. In it, there is a foldable very similar to the one that I created. I must have seen this at some point and have forgotten when I made my version of it above. My apologies to the authors below for using their idea and not giving them proper credit.

#### MATH Angles

#### Here I am!!!! Wow, the last few days have been crazzzzzzy around here. As I mentioned in my last post, I was asked to change from 5th grade Science to 5th grade Math and I have since been scurrying around trying to get my "stuff" together. First of all, I want to begin by saying I am LOVING teaching Math. It is like being reunited with an old friend......teacher friends that have walked into my class even notice the difference in my attitude and enthusiasm. Mental note, if you are feeling tired and weary.............change subjects or grades........mix it up a little, it will make a difference. I have accumulated (on Pinterest) a few Math foldables and ideas that I want to incorporate into my Math journals. I linked every pin to the original author or blog. So without further adieu: This is a great idea that allows the student to create a spinner in their journal. They can use this spinner for probability, fractions and possibly games. Time I love this method of teaching elapsed time. We were working on this today. Measurement Jenn at Beyond the Grades This is a simplified version of gallon man. We cover these types of skills questions all year through the daily use of Simple Solutions Math, if you have never heard of it you might want to check it out here. It is a wonderful workbook that reviews various skills that they have learned up to ( in our case) the 5th grade. They also have a version for Science and English. Love, love, love this resource. Mean, Median Mode and Range Sherrie at Middle School Math Rules Angle Measurement Order of Operations Please, Excuse, My Dear, Aunt Sally I love how this shows multiplication and division on the same step as well as addition and subtraction. These steps are often taught incorrectly. :-( Be sure to follow these links to the original blog. There are many, many more journaling ideas. Blog On!

#### Part of our curriculum is to teach our students how to compare fractions. We focus a great deal on equipping students with strategies for doing this mentally. They take part in an investigation where they 'discover' these mental strategies. Though many students dislike the initially struggle, they realize that developing these mental strategies saves them time in the end. If they just stop and THINK they can often discover which fraction is larger without ever even thinking about 'common denominators.' One reality is that sometimes the use of equivalent fractions is necessary and we ask the kids to use common denominators as a last resort. This foldable was created with the students AFTER the investigation and BEFORE the weekly quiz. It was intended to be a summary reference piece. I created it with the intention of it being used as a FLOWCHART. If you look closely, students are asked to try one of the mental strategies at the top and then it is suggested that they move to the bottom of the foldable flowchart if one of the mental strategies did not apply. {all folded up} {as you open} {close up of mental strategies-outside} {close up of mental strategies-inside} {what to do if one of the mental strategies doesn't work}
