Käthe Kollwitz | Compassionate Action Network This is one of her most famous self portraits. She uses line and the same medium charcoal to give the composition tone and balance whilst creating the emotions. The emotions depict the greif and saddness she is undergoing (German Expressionism)

Käthe Kollwitz (1867 – 1945) was a German painter, and sculptor, the human condition, and the tragedy of war influenced her work. Her empathy for the less fortunate, expressed most famously through the graphic means of drawing, etching, lithography, and woodcut, embraced the victims of poverty, hunger, and war. Initially her work was grounded in Naturalism, and later took on Expressionistic qualities. Was interested in womens lib. and she had 2 sons.
