Genessee Royale Bistro - West Bottoms Tucked away in the West Bottoms, Genessee Royale is worth the trip off the beaten path. Within this former gas station, owners Todd and Tracy Zinn (also owners of Happy Gillis) have created a kitschy cool vibe with quirky, antique décor and laid-back atmosphere. Classic comfort food, local ingredients and rotating menu make this a place you can frequent without getting bored. My most recent trip was on a gorgeous, 80 degree day in March that allowed us to take advantage of their patio. In an 1870’s era neighborhood on the west side of downtown Kansas City, sits a bright corner cafe with original tin ceilings and tile flooring. It’s the kind of place you’d think would house an old-time ice cream shop or maybe a drugstore, but surprisingly it’s one of Kansas City’s best upscale organic restaurants, Blue Bird Bistro.

Escape. The West Bottoms, Kansas City, Missouri The West Bottoms is an industrial area immediately to the west of downtown Kansas City, Missouri at the confluence of the Missouri River and Kansas River. The area is one of the oldest areas in the city. The West Bottoms was originally referred to as the “French Bottoms”. It was the site of trade between French trappers and Kansas Indians.
