Wainscoting on the walls adds cottage charm; the budget-friendly architectural enhancement was created by attaching vertical strips of wood to drywall and capping them with a chair rail. This gets me to thinking... what if we closed off the back side of the staircase so the basement was U-shaped instead of having a stairway coming down the middle of it?
