The Water is Wide by Pat Conroy - Based on Pat's time teaching Daufuskie Island, South Carolina. All of his books are worth reading over and over again.
THE WATER IS WIDE by Pat Conroy; a 1972 memoir based on his work as a teacher on Daufuskie Island, South Carolina.
The Water is Wide by Pat Conroy. I love his books but this is my Favorite. All Educators must read!
As a not-quite-jaded-yet teacher in South Carolina, I felt an immediate kinship with Conroy when I read this.
The Water is Wide by Pat Conroy. Yamacraw is a poor, run-down island with no bridges, little infrastructure. The book details Conroy's efforts to communicate with the islanders, nearly all directly descended from slaves, with little contact with the mainland. He struggles to find ways to reach his students, ages 10 to 13, some of whom are illiterate or innumerate, and none of whom know anything about the world beyond Yamacraw. Great, true story of why he left teaching.
The Water is Wide by Pat Conroy -- The island is nearly deserted, haunting, beautiful. Across a slip of ocean lies South Carolina. But for the handful of families on Yamacraw island, America is a world away. For years the people here lived proudly from the sea, but now its waters are not safe. Waste from industry threatens their very existence–unless, somehow, they can learn a new life. But they will learn nothing without someone to teach them. Pat Conroy becomes their teacher.
The Water is Wide by Pat Conroy. Education, Culture, Diversity, Heart.
The Water is Wide by Pat Conroy ~ Also, an excellent read! ~js

Books by Pat Conroy | My Losing Season
Basketball, Awesome Book, Favorite Writers, Written Novels, Life, Books Worth, Read Books, Authors Books, Favorite Books
Pat Conroy -- one of my favorite writers. This book makes you see things from a different point of view.
Even if you hate sports, you can't help but love this novel by Pat Conroy, one of my favorite authors. His memoir of his basketball days at the Citadel has all the hallmarks of his other incredibly well written novels, but because it is his personal experience relating back to his childhood and life lessons, you can't put it down. I love his other novels as well.
You do not learn how to write novels in a writing program. You learn how by leading an interesting life. Open yourself up to all experience. Let life pour through you the way light pours through leaves.
This is more than basketball. This is growing up and beyond an abusive home. This is becoming the person one always can be no matter what the circumstances are. Victory in defeat and rising out of the ashes are the themes here. Amazing.
i don't know a thing about basketball, and i STILL loved this one...
Pat Conroy, My Losing Season
Pat Conroy, Worth Reading, Basketball, Author, Seasons, Books Worth, College, Losing Season
'My Losing Season' by Pat Conroy: The author reflects on the place of sports in his life, describing his love of basketball, the role of the athlete for young men searching for their own identity, his education at the Citadel, and his journey to best-selling writer.
MY LOSING SEASON is a sports memoir as honest & heartbreaking as a double overtime loss to a hated rival. A work of heartbreak and loss, it is honest & true to life, not a testament to "ifs", it simply is.
"The author reflects on his days at a South Carolina military college. He recalls his love of basketball and its value to him as a means of self-expression, and shares experiences that shed new light on his novel "The Great Santini.""
My Losing Season, Pat Conroy. This book is excellent. It is an amazing story of one boy's journey of overcoming his struggles, and his incredible love of basketball. Sheds a new light on the game and how it is played, and why it is played.
My Losing Season, Pat Conroy. I loved reading some passages of this to my 9th graders, catching some of the boys by surprise!
True story of Pat Conroy's college basketball days...amazing what people (we all have our stories) go through in life.
Of course Mr. Conroy's fiction: Prince Of Tides, The Great Santini, etc... are the plays on the stage that showcase his beautiful writing. But this memoir about his boyhood, playing basketball and trying, always, to please his father, was as beautiful and vital as any of his fiction. LKR

This Man, Worth Reading, Pat Conroy, Books Worth, Favorite Authors, Writers, People, Losing Season, South Carolina
Pat Conroy -- one of my favorite Southern writers. His writing deeply moves me. Few can equal what this man can do with words. Enough said...
Any Book by Pat Conroy is well worth the read. Son of an airforce family he writes semiautobiographical novels of military life of a boy in the south. The Great Santini is an ode to his somewhat abusive pilot father but The Lords of Dicipline, My Losing Season and Prince of Tides are all worth reading.
American writer Pat Conroy, b. Atlanta, GA, 1945, is a leading figure of late-20th century Southern literature. Author of THE WATER IS WIDE (1972); THE GREAT SANTINI (1976); THE LORDS OF DISCIPLINE (1980); THE PRINCE OF TIDES (1986); BEACH MUSIC (1995); MY LOSING SEASON (2002); SOUTH OF BROAD (2009); MY READING LIFE; & THE DEATH OF SANTINI.
PAT CONROY, (New York Times Bestselling Author), taught on Daufuskie Island 1969-1970. Love this man.

Pat Conroy - my favorite authors: The Water is Wide, South of Broad, The Prince of Tides, and The Great Santini.
My all time favorite author, Pat Conroy. I would read his grocery list.

The Lords of Discipline by Pat Conroy: "The Lords of Discipline was assigned reading in my junior year of high school and every single person I knew was obsessed with it. I can't even explain why, as it's intimidatingly large and about life at the Citadel, but it just captured us all. I'm pretty sure everyone cried, like the high school version of Where the Red Fern Grows." — Leah Melby, associate style and trends editor

The glass castle : a memoir by Jeannette Walls (Scribner, 2005) Journalist Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary and their four children lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains.
The Glass Castle: A Memoir by Jeannette Walls. A surreal account about unbreakable children and their chaotic lives with their eccentric parents.
The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. I highly recommend this moving memoir about family dysfunction and unconditional love.
The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls- I really enjoyed reading this, mainly because it was a memoir but it really was a good, touching read.
'The Glass Castle' is a 2005 memoir by Jeannette Walls. The book recounts her and her siblings' unconventional, poverty-stricken upbringing at the hands of their deeply dysfunctional parents.
The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls -- So worth reading! I've read it over 15 times. (Guilty!)
#7--In the last three days I fell in love with The Glass Castle. The first few chapters were charming, quirky, interesting -- I had begun my flirtationship. The Glass Castle quickly turned into a fascinating book I could not put down; I was in love. Towards the end, I felt like I had grown up with Jeannette Walls and her dysfunctional family. Even though the ending was relatively happy, I could not help but be heartbroken over the end of my new favorite book and its beautifully sad narration.
The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls- A great memoir; I never found a boring point.
'The Glass Castle' is a 2005 memoir by Jeannette Walls. The book recounts her and her siblings' unconventional, poverty-stricken upbringing at the hands of their deeply dysfunctional parents. By late 2007, The Glass Castle had sold over 2.5 million copies, had been translated into 22 languages, and received the Christopher Award, the American Library Association's Alex Award (2006) and the Books for Better Living Award.
