    Johnny Carson, who was born in Iowa on Oct. 23, 1925, and raised in Norfolk, Neb., joined the Navy soon after graduating from high school in 1943. He served in the Pacific aboard the USS Pennsylvania for the remainder of World War II, then went on to attend the University of Nebraska.
