I had this book as a kid. I love the cover art. Yeah, it's not scientifically accurate, but it sure is dramatic and communicates the adventure of space travel from a 1950s perspective. Wonder Book, Planets, Books, Scifi, Illustration, Book Covers, Space, Photo, Interplanetary Travel

What if the other planets were as close as the moon? Poor Pluto. He'd just look like the moon anyway.
What the night sky would look like if the other planets in our solar system were as close to earth as the moon:
How would the solar system planets look if they were as close as the moon? Really helps put the planets size comparisons into perspective.

What do you need to listen to, look at, or experience to keep your ideas fresh? The moon has always inspired me and my thoughts. I could just go outside and look at the moon, and for a minute or two it helps me clear my head and think about what I want in life.
Today our intention is to remember that the only thing that’s constant is change. What’s your intention?
Beside it's beauty, I find the moon very inspiring. It appears to be constantly changing, and so therefore it reminds me of the consistency of all life. Life moves in non-linear terms, and we all know karma is a big circle (what comes around goes around). The moon in her phases reminds me of this kind of infinite process of recycling and regeneration.
It took an hour and a half, but I finally put all of the moon phases into my phone calendar!

Vintage Space Travel Posters From the genius (I think it’s safe to call him that) that brought us those awesome Star Wars travel posters, Steve Thomas, comes a collection of planetary vacation advertisements. Come to think of it, these may predate the Star Wars ones, but that’s not important right now. Despite the scientific impossibility of the artwork (skiing on Pluto would be difficult with 8% of Earth’s gravity), they invite dreams of a manned era in solar system exploration that I think we can all support. If you like Steve’s art, visit his store and purchase posters, iPhone cases or postcards of these works and many more.

My weird new obsession. Willy Ley's 'adventure in space' books from the '50s. "Space Travel" is book 4 in the series.
Adventure In Space: Space Travel" by Willy Ley, illustrated by John Polgren (1958 General Mills/Simon & Schuster)
"Adventure In Space: Space Travel" by Willy Ley; 1958 General Mills/Simon & Schuster - illustrated by John Polgren
You look at 1950s space travel books like this and you feel all patronising, like, "sure, you have no idea, stupid," but then you realise that it was people in the 1950s who became the people in the 1960s who actually did travel in space, and all we do is blow up shuttles and fling robots here and there.
It's frightening that rocket and space scientists of sixty years ago were far more innovative than their 'totally lacking any vision' counterparts of today. Our 2015 is another variety of dystopia people would read about in 1955 sci-fi books.
