A quasar is an active supermassive black hole. This is an artist's concept of a dusty torus, or donut, of accreting materials (gravitationally attracted) fueling growth of a quasar. NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey (WISE) telescope just found 2.5 million new quasars, three times as many as previous surveys.

Two teams of astronomers have discovered the largest and farthest reservoir of water ever detected in the universe. The water, equivalent to 140 trillion times all the water in the world's ocean, surrounds a huge, feeding black hole, called a quasar, more than 12 billion light-years away. "artist depiction"

The largest and farthest reservoir of water detected in the Universe. Equivalent to 140 trillion times all the water in the world's ocean! And it surrounds a black hole, called a quasar, more than 12 billion light-years away. Crazy stuff.

"Artist's concept illustrates a quasar." "Two teams of astronomers have discovered the largest and farthest reservoir of water ever detected in the universe. Scientists have discovered the first binary system ever known to consist of a black hole and a ‘spinning’ star – or more accurately, a Be-type star. Although predicted by theory, none had previously been found.

A rare supernova explosion has led scientist's to believe they may be witnessing the birth of a black hole for the first time in history.

Researchers studying what appears to be a beefed-up version of our solar system have discovered that it is encased in a halo of fine dust. The findings are based on infrared data from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope and the European Space Agency's Herschel Space Observatory, in which NASA is a partner.
