The trick is to not use them in their stereotypical way. Ex: "A hard knot clutched at her throat as the little orphan mewed closer, a dirty hand outstretched."

Writers must be fair and remember even the bad guys (most of them, anyway) see themselves as good-- they are the heroes of their own lives. Giving them a fair chance as characters can create some interesting shades of grey-- and shades of grey are also a part of life.

One thing I learned from this- Write under a pen name. Might be fun to have my hs kids write stories under a pen name...
