      Dress, ca. 1914, American, cotton. As women began taking men's places in the labor force, they had less time to partake in leisure activities and to change clothes multiple times a day. Because of this, garments became more functional and rationed to one outfit per day, like this cotton dress. Narrow hobble skirts turned bell shaped and hemlines rose to allow women to move more freely.
