Shadid, who recently died while leaving Syria during a week-long reporting trip to cover the war there, writes about his return to Lebanon three generations after his family left for the U.S. to rebuild his great-grandfather's abandoned home in the town of Marjayoun.
This book just didn't do it for me. I didn't hate it, though I did think the plot was rather silly. I didn't care about any of the characters, which is one of my litmus tests for good books. Frankly, I have no idea why The Vanishers was chosen as one of Amazon's "best" books of the month. The cynic in me suspects bribery. Longer review at my Goodreads page: www.goodreads.com...
From the author of THE ELEGANCE OF THE HEDGEHOG: "In the heart of Paris, in the posh building made famous in The Elegance of the Hedgehog, Pierre Athens, the greatest food critic in the world, is dying... indeed, this flamboyant and self-absorbed man desires only one thing before he dies: one last taste."
