*perfect for a cozy winter christmas!!* Round house, in Little Thetford, Near Ely. England in the Snow
The Round house in Little Thetford, near Ely, is thought to be a late 15th-century dovecote. A Sun Firemark insurance policy still exists, number 616606, dated July 1793, the earliest known written record of the house. Other sources suggest the Round House is an 18th-century thatched cottage, similar to the South African rondavel. A further source classifies this building as a post-medieval, 1540–1900 AD, windmill. A family of 13 children lived in the building during the 19th century.

This folly was photographed in early spring at Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge. It is reminiscent of structures that you can see in formal gardens in England, which, in turn, were derived from southern Mediterranean garden landscapes. The classic shape of columns in a semi-circle, rising from a proportional base references Graeco-Roman architecture, albeit in a romanticized form.

McIntire also designed a smaller, no less exquisite summerhouse for another member of the Derby family, now also traveled from its original location. It remained on the Derby, later Beebe, farm in Wakefield until moved to the grounds of the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, where its setting on a small artificial mount has been carefully recreated.

Garden folly - You are here: Home / Tips and Trends / Garden Follies Garden Follies July 2, 2013 by Sharon McCormick Leave a Comment I love looking at garden follies! These fantastic structures vary from typical garden ornaments in that they imitate buildings and aren’t simply sculptures. For example, a folly may look like a crumbling abbey or a Roman temple. Some follies are built to look like ancient ruins, while others are made to be extravagantly fanciful and improbable.

Staunton Country, Designed, Folly, Parks, Park Originally, Castle, Lewis Vulliamy
Staunton Country Park - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Beacon is a folly built in 1830 in the style of an ionic temple, to a design by Lewis Vulliamy. It was largely built with material from the demolished Purbrook house. It features a hole in a roof designed to allow a flagpole to be placed there. The roof is domed and supported by eight Doric columns.
Interesting architectural features at Staunton country park included in photoshoot contrast with the natural backgrounds resulting in a varied range of images - or simply add interest to a stroll around the park!
