    GRAPEFRUIT Half a medium grapefruit contains around 60% of the daily Value for Vitamin C. Grapefruit is also a good source of vitamin A, folate and vitamin B6. Grapefruit also contains the antioxidants called limonoids and naringin. Red grapefruit is a source of the carotenoid antioxidant lycopene. The grapefruit seed is particularly rich in antioxidants. Grapefruits exceptional vitamin C content means that eating grapefruit can help protect blood vessel walls from damage. In addition, lycopene may help reduce heart disease risk through its ability to lower LDL or bad cholesterol. Foods high in vitamin C, such as tomatoes, help boost the immune system. Vitamin C has been shown to help ward off symptoms of influenza A, the common cold and pneumonia. Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant that helps protect cells from free radical damage and therefore cancer formation. Lycopene has been extensively researched as an anti-cancer agent and has applications in colorectal, prostate, breast, endometrial, lung, and pancreatic cancer prevention. In addition, limonoid found in grapefruit has been shown to inhibit tumour formation by activation of liver detoxification enzymes. There is some evidence that naringin has a thermogenic or fat burning effect. Studies, however, are inconclusive and naringin is unlikely to have much effect on weight loss without proper diet and exercise. Grapefruit is also a low glycemic index (GI) fruit. Low GI diets have been shown to aid weight loss. One of the added benefits of grapefruit is its anti-microbial properties. An extract from grapefruit seed called GSE has been prescribed and used over the years for its anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties. This exceptionally bitter tasting medicine has application in candida albicans (the yeast that causes thrush and related illnesses) management and other bacterial and fungal infections.
