Santa Elena Canyon in Big Bend National Park, TX. Paddle upstream fr Santa Elena Canyon Trailhead, a few miles into the canyon, and return downstream ("boomerang" trip). If water level is low, you do not have to fight the current much going upstream, making this trip quite leisurely. An ideal trip if you do not have a shuttle back to your starting point. See Fern Canyon, about two miles upstream. Backcountry permit required. No day-use fee.

Pine Canyon Trail - BBNP Need high clearance vehicle to reach trailhead, A mostly uphill walk through 1.5 miles of desert country surrounded by foothills of the Chisos Mountains, until you enter the cool, densely wooded beautiful canyon. Then another mile through the canyon until the trail ends at a high pouroff. A fairly easy hike, a bit rugged in the canyon. Start at sunup & return before the noonday sun. Caution: Rattlesnakes may be on & near trail.
