DIY Outdoor Planter Pot for $15! *,******* The Spotted Lamb DIY Large Outdoor Planters For $15! 07/20/201329 Comments We are finally beginning to settle into our new home. And as a result, I am already starting to make the place our own with little decorative touches here and there. Our new house is actually a historic home -- it was built in 1908 as a carriage house and was later converted into a single family home. The owners wanted to preserve as much of its original appreance as possible, so they (thankfully!) kept the gorgeous carriage door openings downstairs and installed 4 sets of french doors....it makes quite a statement when coming down our driveway, and really is one of the many many things I love about our new place!! Anyway, enough cooing....I wanted to really showcase the front of the house and add some color and texture with flowers in large outdoor planters. But, my vision was quickly dashed when I discovered just how expensive outdoor planter pots are!? Our local Home Depot wanted $80 each for a simple tall rectangular outdoor pot.....and knowing that I needed 3 of these pots, along with the cost of actually filling them with flowers, I knew it was going to be too much to spend! So I thought, what could I use instead??? And that's what led to these!!! Can you tell what they are?? Yep, spray painted garbage cans :) Each garbage can planter cost me $15 to make....that's a $65+ savings for EACH planter! Here's a quick rundown of how to create your own $15 outdoor planter pots: Materials For One Planter Pot (I found everything I needed at Home Depot): - One Large Plastic Garbage Can to Fit Your Space - One Small Plastic Garbage Can (you will use this inside of your large can as a space filler, while you are at the store, make sure that you can flip your smaller can upside down and push it comfortably inside the larger garbage can -- pics below) - 1-2 Bricks For Weight - 1 Can of Spray Paint (suitable for plastics) - 1 Bag of Potting Soil as Needed -A drill with a 1 inch drill bit Picture shows materials I used to make 3 planters Step 1: **Use your drill to make four holes (one at each corner) on the bottom of the large garbage cans -- this is ESSENTIAL for drainage....I learned the hard way** Wipe down the exterior of your large garbage can with a dry cloth to make sure you remove any dust and debris. Following the directions on your paint, go ahead and spray paint the entire outside surface of your large garbage can until completely covered and to your liking -- this may take 2-3 coats. Be careful to spray the top rim of the can -- you want to make sure that is covered in paint as well! LET PAINT DRY COMPLETELY!! As you can see, I used one of the bricks as a platform during the spray painting process to make sure I could thoroughly spray the bottom edge of the can. Get creative with your paint color! I chose a hammered copper paint, because I wanted something that would work year round, however, if you live in a warm climate or are only intending to use the planters in the spring and summer, I think a vibrant blue or yellow would look amazing!? Step 2: Once paint has dried, stack your brick(s) at the bottom/center of the large garbage can. Next flip the smaller garbage can upside down and place over the brick(s) at the bottom of the large garbage can. Make sure the smaller can is pushed all the way down. The smaller can acts as a shelf and space filler for the larger can..... Step 3: (optional) Fill the large garbage can with potting soil to the appropriate height for planting. That's it! You're done! I say Step 3 is optional only because you can also skip this step all together -- rather than filling with soil, you can simply buy a potted plant (or in my case a hanging basket) and rest the entire plant on top of the smaller trash can....no one will ever know!!!

Pallet Fire Pit Table.
Not sure about the fire pit in the middle- what's the point of having it in a table? When the fire is going you're not gonna want to put anything on the table. You're either gonna get burned when u reach for it or it will get ashes all over it- But I do like the idea of just a pallet table for the back patio.

IKEA butcher block countertops. I love wooden countertops! Definitely want them in my dream kitchen.
Love the idea of a partial Butcher Block Countertop, because who wants to get out a cutting board every time? :)
Another finished wood countertop - we like the idea of doing reclaimed wood countertops with a beeswax finish ourselves later on. Just don't want the house to be so full of wood that it feels like a ski lodge.
