St. Agnes  Early Christian Mosaics from the Fourth to the Seventh Centuries: Rome, Naples, Milan, Ravenna.  Fourteen Plates in Color.  Translated from the German, 1946.  Jewelled belt, wrapped over dress, decorated underdress and fabric belt. Wonderfully complex hair style. I love it.

Empress Irene (752-803) was the 1st woman to be the sole ruler of the Byzantine Empire.  Born in Athens, Greece. She married in 769, became empress in 775 & in 760 served as regent for her young son after her husband’s death. Known to be extremely ambitious & strong-willed, she restored icon veneration... When her son Constantine IV came of age, he seized power from her in 790 but eventually made her co-ruler in 797. Mom conspired against her own son, had him blinded, & took it all back.
