St. Agnes Early Christian Mosaics from the Fourth to the Seventh Centuries: Rome, Naples, Milan, Ravenna. Fourteen Plates in Color. Translated from the German, 1946. Jewelled belt, wrapped over dress, decorated underdress and fabric belt. Wonderfully complex hair style. I love it.
Empress Irene (752-803) was the 1st woman to be the sole ruler of the Byzantine Empire. Born in Athens, Greece. She married in 769, became empress in 775 & in 760 served as regent for her young son after her husband’s death. Known to be extremely ambitious & strong-willed, she restored icon veneration... When her son Constantine IV came of age, he seized power from her in 790 but eventually made her co-ruler in 797. Mom conspired against her own son, had him blinded, & took it all back.
