LEGO ~ A motorized Lego yarn winder.
I am amazed at the things that can be found on the Internet. Check out this motorized Lego ball winder. The site has a link which provides additional pictures in case you want to make one of your own. Now just steel some Legos from your kid's stash and start building. I also came across this motorized yarn swift made out of Knex parts. Check out the Lego Knitting Machine. You can also see a video of the machine in action at this site. Just scroll down and you will find it. Now, is there a spinning wheel out there somewhere made out of some other toy parts? Note: Come back to this post to see new additions.

Use a collapsible wine rack or dish rack (where to find one?), a lazy susan (I've got one of those), a turkey baster, and duct tape for a DIY yarn swift. The yarn around the turkey baster step looks like a leap that will make sense once you start spinning the thing? Does it attach to it?

Sometimes you want to put a ball winder on an edge of a table that's not perfectly square. Maybe it's bull-nosed or has a weird lip on it. Despair not! A cheapo jar opener can help keep the clamp from slipping off and sending your poor winder flying. (If you care a lot about the surface, be sure to check to make sure said jar opener isn't degrading and melting itself onto your table/bar/whatever every couple of weeks.) P.S. - Are you coming to Yarnover? Come see me! I'll be at Saga Hill Designs.

There are many ways to knit, but whichever style you work in one thing remains constant: knits and purls are never worked in exactly the same way. Consequently it's very common for knit and purl stitches to be slightly different sizes. This can cause a range of visible tension inconsistencies and next week's post will cover dealing with those. It also means that it's common to find a difference in gauge between stockinette worked flat (with purls) and stockinette worked in the round (no purling). Swatch the way the project will be worked A good general rule and in this case that means swatching in the round if the project will be worked in the round. The problem with small tubular swatches Beginning with a sleeve is often recommended as a way to avoid swatching for a sweater but I don't think it's a very reliable method. The reason is that sleeves are smallish tubes and you'll be using magic loop, dpns, or circulars with shortened tips to knit them. The needles end up being held fussily, you're pulling the yarn tight to avoid ladders at the joins, the odds of your gauge being tighter than it normally would be on that size are high. I often go up a needle size for sleeves in order to match the gauge on the rest of the garment. The problem with large tubular swatches Seriously — they're large! If you want to knit a 14-16" circumference in order to have a swatch that fits around a circular needle (and arguably you should go even larger so that it fits on a needle with regular length tips) go right ahead. I do not want to do that. The smarter way to swatch in the round It's not knitting a tube that matters. The crucial thing is whether or not you're working wrong side rows. To work a swatch with no wrong side rows cast on and work the first row on your circular needle. The stitches at the edges will be messy so cast on a sufficient number so that you can measure 4" / 10 cm in the middle. Instead of turning the work for the next row slide all of the stitches to the other end of the needle, just like making an I-cord. Bring the yarn around the back of the work and work across with right side facing. At the end of the row slide the stitches along the needle again. Continue in this manner letting the yarn trail loosely across the back. If you find it difficult to keep the strands loose just let them tighten up. You can cut them to get the swatch to lie flat.

A nostepinne is a Scandinavian knitting tool used to wind your own center pull yarn ball the old fashioned, low-tech way. And they're pretty! found on Etsy
A nostepinne is a Scandinavian knitting tool used to wind your own center pull yarn ball the old fashioned, low-tech way. Photos at right show beginning of winding process. Unlike one of those hand-cranked, mechanical ballwinders, a nostepinne is practically unbreakable, completely portable, does not require clamping to a table, needs no batteries and will not frizz merino yarns. Lathe turned from natural wood , each one is different and unique - no duplicators or templates are used. Sanded at 8 levels to 1500 grit, for a shiny, satin smooth finish, including the grooves - no snags. All natural exotic wood. This one is made of Dymondwood, which is made from 1/16 hardwood veneers that are vacuum impregnated with dye and resin. The veneers are layered and compressed under high pressure and heated to slightly over half the original thickness. It is 10 1/2 inches long, with 5 inches of usable sloped shaft for winding, between top and bottom grooves, and is 7/8 inch in diameter at the widest point. Comes with directions for use, in case you have not used one yet. Great gift for knitters.

Birch Tree Scarf - free knitting pattern
Earlier this year I came across this lovely Birch Trees Scarf knitting pattern over at Hand Knitted Things. Its one of those patterns that you just have to try because its so pretty and very practical and looks far more intricate and complicated than the 4 row pattern suggests. I like to call it cables without the cables, such a clever pattern thank you Julia Marsh. I'm knitting mine on vintage no. 7 needles (kindly given to me by my mother-in-law) and using Debbie Bliss Cashmerino charcoal out of my yarn stash that was meant to be for Ian's scarf! shh don't tell him! I use DB yarn all the time, picking up bargains in John Lewis and eBay but its the first time I've knitted with Cashmerino, and it isn't going to be the last. It gives you great stitch definition and the softest yarn ever, I love it. So here is my scarf in progress. It has been sitting in my car waiting to be loved again after I accidentally knitted the moss stitch border wrong. I know how can you get something so simple wrong when the pattern was more difficult to keep track of, I keep asking myself the same question. But today was the right time to unpick 8 rows and carry on, and I managed it so I'm good to go now (phew)
