A neat factoid about Art Nouveau: The design aesthetic was actually based on the burgeoning middle class. Suddenly there were a lot of people who could afford nice things, but not a maid to keep them clean. The more streamlined art neauveou decor was easier to keep clean than the victorian equivalents had been.
