St Petersburg 25th Sept 1906 - Moscow 9th Aug 1975 Composer Shostakovich lived his whole life under the Soviet system. In 1948 he was denounced and had the accusation of creating ‘anti-people music' levelled against him with his 8th symphony singled out. He was dismissed from his teaching post and mainly wrote only film scores and patriotic music until after Stalin's death.
