One of my two favorite books of all time! "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" — The American classic about a young girl's coming-of-age at the turn of the century. This is one of those heartbreaking yet hopeful stories that will stay with you for a long time.
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is one of my all time favorite books. An author that wrote a very popular book a few years back so obviously plagiarized this book but I've never heard anyone else mention it.

Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls. My book. My all time favorite book as a kid.
THE BOOK that EVERY child should have read to them!! I read this to my children when they were small (4 kids ages 2-7). We read two chapters a night (even though they would BEG me to read "just one more chapter"). I laughed out loud while reading this....and found myself trying to read through a haze of tears. It is just a beautiful story about a boy and his dogs. Very touching...and so worth reading over and over again. (All of my children have re-read this story on their own...several times).

book cover: Little Women by Louise May Alcott ... depicts mother Marmee reading to daughters Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy
Louisa M. Alcott: Little Women _ This is one of my favorite books of all time, and one of the first books I remember my mother reading to me. I identified strongly with Jo, who is strong, creative, and independent. I totally despised Amy, who is superficial, fussy, and precious. Still, when I read it, I want the best for Beth and am in awe of the calm that Marmy and Meg share.
“Little Women” in 1868-69 by Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888). The book was writte in the Alcott family home, Concord, Massachussets. The novel follows the lives of four sisters and is loosely based on the author’s childhood experiences. The work was a fiction novel for girls that veered from the normal writings for children, has three major themes: domesticity, work, and true love. Little Women was one of the most influential novels, creating a new form, which is a unique model.

"There is only now and if now is only two days, then two days is your life and everything in it will be in proportion." -- Wonderful Hemingway book
For Whom the Bell Tolls. Ernest Hemingway. First edition, 1940, Charles Scribner’s Sons. War novel. American in the International Brigades is attached to a republican guerrilla unit during the Spanish Civil War. “Today is only one day in all the days that will ever be. But what will happen in all the other days that ever come can depend on what you do today.” (Hemingway). One of my favorite books.
Glad I read this in high school..don't have the patience for it now..great story....one of the greatest of all time.
-The story of Robert Jordan, a young American in the International Brigades attached to a republican guerrilla unit during the Spanish Civil War. As a dynamiter, he is assigned to blow up a bridge during an attack on the city of Segovia.
Both Orwell and Hemingway fought in the Spanish Civil War. I've hear they met in Paris sometime around 1945. I wonder what they talked about. Hard to imagine them liking one another.
This was my first Hemingway book. To be honest, I picked it up because it was the name of a Metallica song, and I was like "Hmm, that's very strange, I wonder why they named it after a book." Well this became a "gateway drug" into the works of Hemingway. No matter what people hate about him for some reason, he was also my gateway drug back into reading in general. I enjoy him, and should really finish the rest of his books. I don't have many to go.

Gone with the Wind... Seriously one of my all time favorite books! Remarkably different than the movie (altho who doesn't love Clark Gabel anyways!)

A beautiful book that blends many different cultures. Of course, I love that it's written by a Nashville-based author.
Opera singer and audience taken hostage in an unnamed South African country .... sounds dubious but the excerpt sounds luminous so I may have to try it!
Beautiful book. It's one of the few I pick up and reread every so often. Not a huge fan of her other work, but Bel Canto remains to be one of my favorite go to books.
Beautiful book about unlikely friendships and relationships that are formed when a group of people are taken hostage
Good! Has an opera singer in it -- who would come up with that except Ann Patchett? 4 1/2 stars.
I envy you if this book is still ahead of you! It's an almost perfect novel -- exquisite and absorbing -- you won't want it to end. It takes place in an unnamed Latin American country, where the vice president is throwing a lavish party for a Japanese business executive. A famous opera singer is performing, when the house is taken over by guerillas. The story is about the characters and relationships that develop during the siege ... It's absolutely riveting.
Bel Canto is my favorite book. Reading this story is like eating decadent dark chocolate.
The Diary of a Young Girl is a book of the writings from the Dutch language diary kept by Anne Frank while she was in hiding for two years with her family during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. The family was apprehended in 1944 and Anne Frank ultimately died of typhus in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. After the war, the diary was retrieved by Anne's father, Otto Frank, the only known survivor of the family.

The Diary of a Young Girl - Anne Frank. My favorite book of all time. I read mine til it fell apart.
The Diary of a Young girl is a very good and factual book. The book is the diary of jewish girl Anne frank, at the age of 13 years. In her diary Anne Frank recorded vivid impressions of her experiences during this period. By turns thoughtful, moving, and amusing, her account offers a fascinating commentary on human courage and frailty and a compelling self-portrait of a sensitive and spirited young woman whose promise was tragically cut short.
Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl - Anne Frank Challenged at the Culpeper County, Va. schools (2010). Initially, it was reported that officials decided to stop assigning the book due to complaints that it includes sexual material & homosexual themes. The edition published on the 50th anniversary of Frank’s death won't be used in the future despite the fact the school system did not follow its own policy for complaints.
