This old photo first appeared on LIFE magazine on December 27, 1948. Four-man bicycle is powered by five chains and has brakes on both its wheels. The bike was built by Art Rothschild (top position) who broke three ribs while learning how to ride it.

The Art Institute, 1907, Chicago.

Lake Shore Drive was laid out in 1875 to connect Oak Street with North Avenue, at the south end of Lincoln Park, but it grew into the thoroughfare that runs the length of Chicago's lakefront parks. This view, from the 1920s, looks north from about Oak Street.

In the early 1900s Lake Shore Drive was extremely close to the waters edge of Lake Michigan, as seen here in Jackson Park, circa 1907. Chicago would end up extending itself eastward with landfill in a counterattack on Lake Michigan's persistent erosion of the shoreline.
