Space Shuttle breaching the clouds. JUST. PLAIN. AWESOME! I have a launch photo on my wall from underneath, but THIS is getting printed out and going right next to it!!! BTW, someone named J. Stafford is blocking people for telling him that people snap photos like this all the time. Yep, this one's signed so didn't happen, but I work/study this field, and they DO happen!

No, it is a composite of two different images put together by photographer Richard Silvera. "The picture of the sky and clouds was…

space shuttle £ This is a composite of 2 images by photographer Richard Silvera. “The picture of the sky & clouds was taken by me from an airplane,” Silvera wrote, “and the shuttle is a picture from NASA. Then the assembly was done in Photoshop & Lightroom.” Shuttles do not launch perfectly vertical (roll program starts shortly after launch) & restrictions on aircraft in the area during a launch prevent anyone being this close to take a photo.

Joshua Evans at Fave Thing: "It's a fake. I wish it wasn't. Sorry folks, it's a fake. The photo of the sky and clouds was taken from a plane by Richard Silvera while the image of the Space Shuttle was sourced from NASA. When I first saw this black and white photo of the Space Shuttle piercing the cloud cover I thought 'awesome!'. But when I looked into the image more I learned it was a montage." (

Although the last of NASA's space shuttles has now been retired, it is still fun to contemplate sitting at the controls of one of the humanity's most sophisticated machines. Pictured above is the flight deck of Space Shuttle Endeavour, the youngest shuttle and the second to last ever launched. #astronomy
