Jane O'Connor (born 1947) got her bachelor's degree in English literature from Smith College, and began her career working in the editorial department of Hastings House Publishers. She was an editor at Scholastic, Inc., then moved to Random House, where she became editor-in-chief of children's books. She has written more than 30 children's books including the Nina, Nina Ballerina stories, the Fancy Nancy series and the adult novels Dangerous Admissions and Almost True Confessions.

She was born in Peabody, Massachusetts, raised in that state, and graduated with a B.A. in English from Yale College. She was a National Book Award  nominee for The Rules of Survival, a winner of the Edgar Award for Best Young Adult Novel for The Killer's Cousin in 1999, and an Edgar award finalist for Locked Inside.
