Spinning Wheel by MuseumWales, via Flickr--- this kind of Wheel, with no treadles, is called a great Wheel, and it was for spinning wool-- you spin the Wheel by hand, as well as manipulating the fibrs with your hand-- sounds tricky, but with practice produces even and well controlled finished materials.
The Great Wheel on display was commonplace by the 1300s. Operated by standing, they were relatively cheap to buy so that even poor families could afford one.

The Economic History of Work and Family. This course will explore the relation of women and men in both pre-industrial and modern societies to the changing map of public and private (household) work spaces, examining how that map affected their opportunities for both productive activity and the consumption of goods and leisure. The reproductive strategies of women, either in conjunction with or in opposition to their families, will be the third major theme of the course.

Traditional dress of Alsace, 1870.
Alsatian women are frequently portrayed as wearing a large black bow. Actually, there are numerous traditional coiffes or caps for the region, but this one has come to represent all of Alsace. It was worn by the women in protest of the German occupation of Alsace in 1870 and 1914. You have to admire them for making their political views known! The traditional costume is now only worn for special fêtes or holidays. Castroville, the Little Alsace of Texas
