The Star, Drawing by Edgar Degas (1834-1917, France). Dancer with a Bouquet of Flowers, also known as Star of the Ballet (1876-77), is pastel on monotype artwork by the French artist Edgar Degas. Degas painted a series of ballet dance related paintings and this is one of them. His dancers are beautiful in color and composition and highly appreciated by art critics.
Edgar Degas was fascinated with the movement of dance and over half of his paintings are focused on this subject matter. Prima Ballerina is from 1876-77. http://www.edgar-degas.org/ ... #ballet #art #color #painting
Edgar Degas. His paintings of dancers shown backstage or in rehearsal emphasized their status as professionals doing a job. From 1870 Degas increasingly painted ballet subjects because they sold well and provided him with needed income after his brother's debts had left the family bankrupt.
L'etoile [La danseuse sur la scene], or The Star [Dancer on Stage] (1878) by Edgar Degas. I love his ballerina paintings.
The Star (Dance on Stage) - Edgar Degas (1878). Degas is, after Van Gogh, my favourite impressionist. His skills depicting the movement in ballet paintings are famous; his mastery of the color, obvious.

L'etoile [La danseuse sur la scene] (The Star [Dancer on Stage]) by Edgar Degas. (1878 (150 Kb); Pastel on paper, 60 x 44 cm (23 5/8 x 17 3/8 in); Musee d'Orsay, Paris) I had to share this one - I did ballet when I was younger, and I had a print of this painting on the wall of my room. I love the movement in the painting - not just in the positioning of the ballerina, but in the color and the brushstrokes.

Love the color, the subject matter, the hint of movement and grace. Edgar Degas 'Dancers at the Barre'
In Dancers at the Bar by Edgar Degas, 1888, the artist used complementary colors to make a sharp contrast between the figures and the space.

Degas Two Dancers at the Barre, early 1880s−c. 1900, Oil on canvas, 51 1/4 x 38 1/2 in. The Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C. Acquired 1944. This painting is the centerpiece of the current exhibition.
Degas' Dancers at the Bar - This Degas painting contains a visual pun. He regretted it after delivering the painting and asked to rework it. The new owner refused.
Here's a nice quote by Edgar Degas with plenty of examples of his amazing work! #quote #edgar #degas #painting #composition #masters #inspiration
Edgar Degas, Dancers at The Bar, 1888, The Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C. - Impressionists took advantage of the mid-century introduction of premixed paints in lead tubes (resembling modern toothpaste tubes), which allowed artists to work more spontaneously, both outdoors and indoors. Previously, painters made their own paints individually, by grinding and mixing dry pigment powders with linseed oil, which were then stored in animal bladders.

This drawing features many of Degas’s idiosyncratic hallmarks: the size of the figure is too large for the sheet of paper, and the artist’s preliminary lines remain visible, revealing his artistic process. | Degas, "Dancer Stretching," © Kimbell Art Museum

Dancer in Her Dressing Room (c.1870). Edgar Degas (French, Impressionism, 1834-1917). Pastel. Cincinnati Art Museum. His study of Japanese prints led him to experiment with unusual visual angles and asymmetrical compositions. His subjects often appear cropped at the edges, as in this Dancer in Her Dressing Room. In Woman with Chrysanthemums, the female subject of the picture is pushed into a corner of the canvas by the large central bouquet of flowers.

The Green Dancer. Edgar Degas. 1879. Degas was fascinated by the world of ballet which figured prominently in many of his paintings. Here, a group of dancers is depicted in mid-performance, as viewed from an upper side box. One of the girls in green is shown full-length, captured as she executes a swift, complicated turn. The other figures are cropped, leaving the viewer to imagine the rest. Degas' use of a cropped, off-centred pictorial space was influenced by photography and Japanese prints.
Edgar Degas: Swaying Dancer. A very famous painting.
(Green Dancer) French Impressionist painter Edgar Degas, one of the great artists of the world, is most known for his paintings of girls dancing at the ballet which make up over half of his total work. Considered to be a founder of Impressionism, Degas (1834 – 1917) nonetheless rejected the movement’s penchant for painting outdoors and portraying natural light. Intent on capturing poses as natural and spontaneous as a photograph, his studies of female dancers are celebrated as supreme masterpieces and mark him as an innovator in his own right. Degas completed paintings in his studio that originated as sketches of living models, strongly influencing later artists such as Picasso and Toulouse-Lautrec. "Only when he no longer knows what he is doing does the painter do good things." - Edgar Degas (art.com)

Degas' Little Dancer // I unintentionally ran in to this at The Met a couple of years ago. I had been dying to see it for as long as I could remember. I wondered into a quiet room, and there she was. Another woman did the same, just as I, and we both looked at each other, tears in our eyes. It was so beautiful.
