"I feel like everyone was talking about this book over the holidays, and I was slow to pick it up. But honestly, I hate myself for it, because I would have loved to read this on my days off in December, in one uninterrupted stretch. The characters are so compelling and charming, I never want to leave them

Committed, A Love Story by Elizabeth Gilbert. The follow up to Eat Pray Love. Still to read.
I was the only one in my book club who liked this one but it gave me a lot of food for thought and I spent a lot of the time reading it with highlighter in hand because there were so many things that I found interesting!
COMMITTED: A Love Story by Elizabeth Gilbert is a great book on history of marriage and her own.
worth reading committed Elizabeth Gilbert
At the end of her memoir Eat, Pray, Love, Elizabeth Gilbert fell in love with Felipe, a Brazilian living in Indonesia. The couple swore eternal love, but also swore (as skittish divorce survivors) never to marry. However, providence intervened in the form of a U.S. government ultimatum: get married, or Felipe could never enter America again.

Stern Men. Picked this up at a used book sale, and had no idea it was written by the Eat, Pray, Love lady. I'm glad I didn't know, because I'd probably have throw it back. Instead I enjoyed a great story about lobstermen and women in Maine.
Stern Men - Elizabeth Gilbert - Must read... I've loved all of her other books.
doesnt grab you right away, but still worth reading.
Off the coast of Maine, Ruth Thomas is born into a feud fought for generations by two groups of local lobstermen over fishing rights for the waters that lie between their respective islands. At 18, she has returned from boarding school - smart as a whip, feisty, and irredeemably unromantic - determined to throw over her education and join the "stern men" working the lobster boats.

Native Son has a realistic point of view of the 1930's, Richard Wright takes the time to show the point of view of a African Americans struggle in society. One of the main struggles we see is racial inequality. Bigger, the main character, goes through obstacles trying to find a way to provide for his family financially.
Native Son is one of the ALA's frequently challenged classics. Find it at #NYPL! #bannedbooks #NativeSon #RichardWright #books
Native Son (Perennial Classics) by Richard Wright, http://www.amazon.com/dp/006083756X/ref=cm_sw_r_pi_dp_8l3jrb0AEPMVA
Native Son by Richard Wright is a powerful novel set in Chicago in the 1930s. It’s about a young black man caught in a downward spiral after he kills a young white woman in a brief moment of panic. This novel can be used to reflect on the poverty and feelings of hopelessness experienced by people and display what it means to be black in America during the 1930s.

the picture of dorian gray by oscar wilde great book!
Dorian Gray, I loved it. Oscar Wilde is incredibly witty. This one is short and a quick read, so pick it up. It's worth reading.
Oscar Wilde... playwright, novelist, poet, short story writer & wit.A phenomenon in 19th century England. Dorian Grey is convinced that beauty is all-important and wishes that his portrait would age instead of him. Beware of what you wish for! each time Dorian commits a sin his portrait ages, showing him what is happening to his soul. An all time classic read -- High school required reading.. :P
Night by Elie Wiesel. No other book captures the horror, despair, and loss of faith wrought by the Holocaust. How anyone survived such debasement and slaughter is beyond me. Just hearing the title of this book makes me weak with sadness and fury. Elie Wiesel is a role-model that everyone of any age or race or religion should admire.

Night (Oprah's Book Club) [Paperback], (holocaust, concentration camp, history, jewish, biography, world war ii, oprah, personal narratives, oprah book club, elie wiesel)
Night (Oprah's Book Club) by Elie Wiesel Every human must read this book. Heartbreaking. Hopeful. Enlightening. I'd always wondered why European Jews didn't leave before imprisonment. This answers that question and more. A gripping account of where God is in suffering.
Night - Elie Wiesel This is also one of my favorite books to teach. It's about a father and son trying to survive the concentration camps during the Holocaust. My students and I wrote to the author this past school year and he actually wrote back to us!

2013--For One More Day (Mitch Albom) A quick read, and it definitely held my interest. A good book, though not a 5-star one for me. I recall reading Tuesdays With Morrie in college and being deeply moved. This wasn't on the same level for me. Still, I'm glad I read it. :)
the five people you meet in heaven
Worth Reading, Good Reading, Book Worth, Amazing Book, Movie, Mitch Albom, Favorite Book, Good Book, Great Book
Mitch Albom is not usually the kind of author I would read. I'm a big SF/fantasy reader. This book I picked up BECAUSE it had some aspects of fantasy I thought I might like... after all, the biggest selling fantasy/SF book in history is the Bible! The story revolves around a man who has led a very mundane life, under-achieving and under-appreciated. He has worked in a fairground. Partially the book describes his life on earth, but from the interesting perspective of Heaven. He has died and he has been transported to Heaven. The main concept of the book is to discover what Heaven might be like. Here, the hero meets five people, each of whom have had an impact on his life. It is when he talks with them that we are taken back to his life on earth. As you'd expect, this is a sentimental book. I've read two of Albom's books now (I'm also going to pin a review of the other shortly) and he is definitely a sentimentalist! Again, not the sort of thing I would normally read. However, in this book I found Albom's depiction of Heaven interesting - and much preferable to the depiction usually assigned to this mythical place. If Heaven were as Mitch Albom imagines it, I'd be on my way there (but then we all would, so what does being religious matter?). The book is fascinating whilst, as I've already said, mundane. There is nothing special about the protagonist yet the way story is constructed draws us into his life and emotions. Don't expect any deep religious meaning here, and if you're a Christian I'm sure you're idea of Heaven is very different to Albom's; but, if you enjoy a good read, and don't necessarily need a lot of action, try it.
Mitch Albom ~ The Five People you Meet in Heaven ... GREAT book (horrible movie)
Be prepared to CRY! I thought this was a very good book, and when the movie came out, it was exactly as I pictured all the scenes would be...the colors, the images, the people...everything! Either Mitch Albom is a very good writer...or I should become a film maker!
The Five People You Meet In Heaven ~ Mitch Albom. Definately a bokk worth reading more than once.
