DIY Name Tags that the students create during the first week of school Not repeating this one. I miss my old nametags that had good info on them, plus these took way too long to do. When I got a new student, I didn't have time to get them to make one. Fail.

Great start of the year activity. Reading Chrysanthemum and then having students find out what their name mean. The students are performing a short song that incorporates body percussion, singing/chanting, and rhythmic speech in saying their name and introducing themselves to the class.

Back-to-School idea: Students create a brochure about their summer. Great idea for the first week of school!

After reading Seuss's Apples Up On Top, have students create their name apples on top of their first day photo. If you use 3 different colors you can teach an ABCABC pattern, as well as that science fact. There's also a graphing extension for how many letters students have in their name. FREE templates.

This is a great peer-review strategy for any classroom! Students can swap writing pieces and complete a TAG form. They can create a TAG sticky note and do a gallery walk of writing pieces, TAGging each writing piece displayed with their feedback. FREE!! This is a perfect way to promote positive feedback and student reflection during writing workshop!

This is amazing! By the 3rd day the minute the helpers were passing out papers the boys and girls were sing it without me!! It worked! No papers without names this week!!

Cool Bulletin Board idea to "spotlight" a student or famous person. I would do both. Maybe every week a different actor, playwright, designer, etc to research to extra credit or a weekly report, and every now and then a student, to make them feel special having been up on the same wall as a big name.

Teach children how to be a great friend - great poem to introduce to school age children in understanding friendship.
