Mediterranean monk seal, one of the most endangered animals in the world, fewer than 600 left alive. Lives in Mediterranean Sea area, eastern Atlantic Ocean, and Tropic of Cancer. Decreased population due to HUMANS hunting it, and killing it because fishermen think it damages their seal nets, also more people living on the coast, and pollution.

What a sweet little face, and those eyes :) Critically Endangered. (and blamed for eating fish!) Fewer than 600 Mediterranean monk seals exist and they are one of world’s most critically endangered marine mammals. Their decline can be attributed to industrial development and the establishment of resort areas along the Mediterranean Sea- but fisherman have also played their part in causing such low numbers. Illegal shooting occurs very frequently because seals are blamed for eating all the fish.

Nonggang Babbler Named for the Nonggang Natural Reserve in which it was found, this Sino-Vietnamese bird lives in flocks of five to 10 and flies short distances — but only when frightened. Most of its time is spent foraging for insects that live between rocks. So far, only 30 of these birds have been spotted. A rare and beautiful sighting! (Washington, D.C., May 18, 2011) A unique and mysterious guinea-pig-sized rodent, not seen since 1898 despite several organized searches, bizarrely showed up at  the front door of an ecolodge at a nature reserve in Colombia, South America. The magnificent red-crested tree rat (Santamartamys rufodorsalis) stayed for almost two hours while two research volunteers took the first photos ever of a creature the world thought would never be seen again.

Lowland Streaked Tenrec: The lowland streaked tenrec is just one of the tenrec types that calls Madagascar home. Described as a cross between a shrew and a hedgehog, tenrecs have a long snout and sharp spikes that pop up out of their fur. And while other members of the breed are in more danger than the lowland streaked tenrec, the specificity of its home means it is vulnerable to the same threats that landed other Madgascaran animals on the endangered species list.

Critically Endangered. Could you eat this? A critically endangered species is defined as a species at extremely high risk of extinction in the wild. The Siau Island tarsier, for example, inhabits only one small Indonesian island dominated by an active volcano. “Depending on the magnitude of the eruption and the path of the lava flows, the population could be severely affected or even possibly disappear,” said Rebecca Miller, program officer for the U.K.-based Red List Unit. The big-eyed primates also face immediate pressure from islanders who have both degraded nearly the entire tarsier habitat and hunted the animals extensively—wiping out perhaps 80 percent during the past decade. “There are credible reports that the locals regularly eat them and may serve five to ten in a single sitting,” Miller said.
