The Loomis Homestead in Windsor, Connecticut is one of the oldest timber-frame houses in America. The oldest part of the house was built in 1640 by Joseph Loomis who came to America from England in 1638. Later additions to the Loomis house were made around the turn of the eighteenth century. The house is now adjacent to the Loomis Chaffee school. Joseph Loomis his wife Mary (White) are one of my sets of 9th great-grandparents.

The Mission House in Stockbridge, Massachusetts was built between 1739 & 1742 by a Christian missionary to the local Mahicans. In 1739 Sergeant married Abigail Williams, the seventeen-year-old daughter of one of Stockbridge's English settlers. She wanted to live outside the village, so Sergeant had a new house built on Prospect Hill, overlooking the village. The Sergeants lived there until his death in 1749. Abigail remarried & eventually moved out of the house, but it remained in the family.

English Colonial Style homes of the 1600s and 1700s look different than their modern counterparts today. Most early English settlers built two-story wood frame homes with a few small diamond-shaped lead pane windows. The homes generally had an open floor design with a fireplace in the middle to heat the entire house during the cold New England winters. The central chimney is a key feature of this early home style. The most notable English Colonial Style home is the House with Seven Gables.
