Tornado in the desert of Namibia. When the last of my babies is grown and leaves the nest I plan on indulging a craving for a particular adventure: stormchasing. As long as I can remember I have had dreams about tornados, and while the personal, close-up encounters leave me with a great deal of reverence and cautious respect, they have also imparted an abiding hunger to chase. I always thought it would lead me to a summer adventure in the midwest for a couple of weeks, chasing with a professional storm team. Seeing this photo my horizons have suddenly expanded. I don't know how frequent this occurrence is in a place like Namibia, and it certainly looks a great deal more ominous, but it's inspired a deep curiosity to learn more. Thanks to Jenn Smith for helping me discover the terrible beauty of this unexpected treasure and potential future adventure from photographer Francesco Middei of National Geographic Italia. -- Eve.

Widely mislabeled as a tornado, but actually the shadow cast by the edge of a giant sand dune. The Namib desert, where this was shot, has some of the highest in the world.

I hate that this is a real place, but what a surreal and fantastical setting for a shoot this would be.
