    Charlie Bowdre was a regulator in the Lincoln County merchant wars along with Billy the Kid

    Charlie Bowdre rode with Billy the Kid and cowboyed around the Fort Sumner, NM area. He ended up dead at Stinking Springs when a sheriff posse shot him. They found this photo in his clothing; the blood stains are Bowdre's.

    There is a nearly shocking moment, as you look at this photo, when it hits you that it's not modern (by any stretch of the imagination), it is of (photographer) Albert Sands Southworth and was taken in 1848. A time when the last thing most people (today) would imagine a prim and proper Victorian gentleman doing would be to pose for a topless self-portrait.
