John Atkinson Grimshaw (1836-1893) A moonlit lane, signed and dated ‘Atkinson Grimshaw 1874’ (lower left) oil on card, 21½ x 16¾ in. (54.6 x 42.5 cm.) Lot Notes: During the 1870s Grimshaw developed a reputation for depicting suburban lanes in autumn, where moonlight was filtered by an ever changing cloudscape. Whistler, a close friend of the artist, later noted: ‘I considered myself the inventor of nocturnes, until I saw Grimmy’s moonlight pictures’.
